No 'Dhanush' Howitzer for the Army?

.
Parrikar is actually interested in buying foreign weapons as he wants to secure our operational needs.

Most people think he wants to invest in failed indigenous crap which serve no purpose.

.
Yes some, of the top generals need real danda. they are just playing with the tax payers money.

INDIAN ARMED FORCES HAVE TO BUY INDIAN MADE WEAPONS, GOOD OR BAD. THEY SHOULD NOT COMPETE WITH FOREIGN WEAPONS. IN ANY COUNTRY INDIGENOUS WEAPONS DON'T NEED TO FIGHT WITH FOREIGN DALALS, IN INDIA DRDO FIGHTS WITH EVERYONE TO BUY INDIAN.

What do you mean good or bad? Just because it is Indian you should buy crappy systems?

.
Why don't they induct it first now that they need it so urgently and then decide whether its worthy to serve the forces or not.I guess the US Army follows this practice of inducting any hardware first and then come up with suggestions for betterment or making right any snag!!:sad::sad:

I mean some of the products may not be equivalent to their western counterparts but that doesn't mean they are bad. Armed forces have to buy them. If armed forces starts buying Indians atleast the money will stay in india.

.
Its not possible to induct Arjun in large numbers due to cost. At 60 crore a tank it is the world's most expensive MBT.

$10 million for a Arjun.
$2.5 million for a Russian T-90.

The choice is a no brainer.

This $10 million price tag persists even after 366 Arjun have been delivered/ordered.

For that you need to have a credible defense industry of your own. If Armed forces requirements are met, fine. If not, import. That's how it works for developing world.

The Army is desperately short of new long-range artillery having failed to induct any new gun after the Bofors scandal.
After placing an initial order of 114 indigenously-made Dhanush howitzers, there are doubts whether the Army will go ahead with the purchase even though a snag in the gun has been sorted out.

The Army is desperately short of new long-range artillery having failed to induct any new gun after the Bofors scandal.

The Dhanush is an upgraded version of the Swedish 155 mm Bofors howitzers bought by India in mid-1980s based on the original designs. It is a 155mm, 45-calibre gun with a maximum effective range of 38 km in salvo mode compared to the 39-calibre, 27-km range of the original guns. It is 80 per cent indigenous, with the APU (auxiliary power unit), electronic dial sights and few other small items being imported.

The Dhanush prototype suffered a barrel burst during firing trials at Pokhran in August last year, which has since been resolved.

An official with knowledge of the matter said. “It's true that the trial at Pokhran didn't go well. There was a barrel burst. However, it was later confirmed that the burst was not due to a defective barrel, rather the ammunition wobbled out-of-axis to exert additional pressure on the barrel, causing the accident”.

The official added that “the raw barrel was sent from the Metal & Steel factory, Ishapore, which is known amongst the ordnance factories for its quality barrel work”.

The army has placed an initial order for 114 guns and an expressed interest in procuring 300 additional howitzers. But after the initial enthusiasm, the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) is presently awaiting an indent from the Indian Army. The present lull may be an indication that the Army may be weighing other options of procuring howitzers.

Despite numerous efforts, Defence Ministry and Army officials were not available for comment.

IN ANY COUNTRY INDIGENOUS WEAPONS DON'T NEED TO FIGHT WITH FOREIGN DALALS

Boeing KC 767 competed for the USAF tender against the Airbus A330 MRTT, Bell LUH helicopter competed against Eurocopter UH145 versions. Hawker Beechcraft trainers competed with Embraer Tucanos for light attack and reconnaissance tenders..., even Russia had opened up their defence market for foreign arms and techs, because competition gets you lower procurement costs and more technical capability. In our case, the monopoly we gave DRDO and HAL with preference to indigenous developments has even turned out as the biggest problems. If we had not waited for HAL to develop HTT40, but had pitted them in a competition against foreign trainers, they surely had put more effort in the development.

All procurements have operational requirements of the forces as the base and no arm or tech can be accepted below these standards, no matter if foreign or indigenous. Indigenous arms and techs don't have to be top class as DRDO often claims them to be, but they have to at least fulfill the minimum requirements!

Army wants a 52 caliber howitzer and not 45 caliber thats why probably they are not inducting it in large numbers.

These examples are like few drops in a ocean. lol

Please talk on facts before going anti-DRDO. There are top class, they cant be compared against best from all over the world. learn from Chinese industry and PLA acquisitions.

Considering heavy influence of our private industry in our present government and PM Modi's 'Make in India' campaign .I dont see a chance of foreign purchasing of Artilleries.Either Dhanush or private systems they will ended up in indigenous one .
We already saw GoI direct decision when they cancelled foreign Heli deals

.
I wonder if further trials were carried out by the army after that barrel burst? What were the results?

They were, and passed the subsequent tests. I think what the IA is doing is........simply awaiting the tests of the other howitzers under development. Since the mobility factor in them (among other factors) is greater than the UPG Bofors aka Dhanush. If the IA had just no choice at all, then it would have plumped for more Dhanush . But times seem to be changing, OFB will have to work even harder to drum up more business in the future.
