No crowds as Apple’s iPhone 11 hits stores
Reuters On Sep 21, 2019

BEIJING/SHANGHAI: Apple’s latest iPhone 11 range hit stores in China on Friday, with short queues of die-hard fans contrasting with the hundreds who camped out ahead of some previous launches.

The sales performance of the U.S. tech giant’s latest line-up is being closely watched in the world’s largest smartphone market, where Apple has been losing ground to competitors with cheaper and feature-packed handsets in recent years.

The queues at the Shanghai and Beijing stores, which combined added up to few dozen customers, were in sharp contrast to previous years, when hundreds used to wait for hours outside Apple’s shops to be the first to grab its latest offerings.

But much of the fanfare in China has moved online where the pre-sales for iPhone 11, priced between $699 and $1,099, started last week.

Analysts said they had gotten off to a better start than the last cycle a year ago. Chinese e-commerce site JD.com said day one pre-sales for the iPhone 11 series were up 480% versus comparable sales for the iPhone XR last year.

Among customers that took to a store in Beijing on Friday to make a purchase in person was a programmer who only gave his surname as Liu, who said he had a model from every Apple series since the 3G range.

He said he was particularly attracted to the more expensive iPhone 11 Pro, which has three cameras on the back. “When it comes to taking photos, it’s better for night shots and the image is clearer,” he told Reuters.

Other customers, however, said that they were concerned that the range was not enabled for fifth-generation networks, putting them behind 5G models already released by China’s Huawei Technologies and smaller rival Vivo, and expressed hopes that Apple could make it happen for its next line-up.

“I think by the end of next year, especially in big cities like Beijing, 5G will be commonplace,” said civil servant Liu Liu. “If they don’t research this then they’ll lag way behind.”

The in-store launch of the iPhone 11 in China came a day after Chinese smartphone maker Huawei unveiled new smartphones which it said were more compact, with more sensitive cameras and wraparound screens more vivid than those of the latest iPhone, though it played down concerns about the lack of access to Google’s popular apps.

Huawei has experienced a surge in support from Chinese consumers after the brand was caught up in a trade war between the United States and China, which has in turn eaten into Apple’s market share in the country.

When the Syrian Genius is dead, the "Yes Man" of corporate America will take his place and they forget .... what made Syrian Genius of Apple who he was

a) Sleek Design
b) User Acceptance
c) User-Friendly
d) Loaded with Technology

China should ban iPhone because users are requested to register at Apple Web site in order to register their phone, in case of any trade war , USA could lock out Million of Chinese phones with simple click of switch from Apple

No one wants to spend £900 on a phone, especially when they can get better or compareable phones for 1/3 the price

LOL who is going to keep buying 1000 euro or dollar phones? Android phones which cost a fraction and offer superb performance are being bought like hot cakes.

Every tech giant has his time,Once there was Nokia.

Remember Blackberry LOL

Sales are becoming increasingly digitalized in this age. Just place your order and wait for shipment to your mailing address.

Not many people will be willing to stand in massive lines to buy some hardware at present. I wouldn't.

This is not true either.

Apple is an ecosystem whose perks do not exist for Android users. There is no substitute either. You invest in Apple for better security, not just for shashkaa.

Android = absolutely unsecure environment. Not many realize this yet.

Its bleeding marketshare
This snobby attitude was behind the downfall of Blackberry

I think this year iPhone sales will be better then last year.

1. iPhone 11 is now $50 cheaper then XR last year.
2. Best camera in the world beating Pixel 3. Though its possible upcoming Pixel 4 in few weeks may beat it.
3. 25% increase in battery in pro model. Will last longer then any high end smartphone from android.

This best camera argument doesn't hold today. Other phones have excellent cameras which only cost a fraction. I have an LG V30 which is a media phone. Excellent camera, superb audio and all round performance. It is not the latest and greatest, but it is still very good and holds its own with the latest.

People aren't going to dump their 1 year, 2 year or even 3 year old phones, but replace the battery. iPhone sales are not going to be the same as before.

There is one other huge problem for phone makers. They are not offering anything new that is going to impress the buyers. Phones have today reached a saturation level. The wow factor is not there anymore. Every modern phone offers more or less the same thing a phone offered years ago. A new phone each year that costs approx. 1000 dollar/euros is out of reach for many people.

I agree with you. Used iPhone 6S for 3 years before buying iPhone XS last year.

Only thing which get worse with time is battery. Before iPhone cameras were just used to be as good as others and worse then Pixel, this year its different for the first time. There are only 2 things left that haven't reached saturation point for smartphones and that is camera and battery.

For rest it doesnt matter anymore like cpu, ram, screen, etc

The cameras have gotten better. Although not comparable to DSLR or quality handhelds, but still pretty good. Night shots is where some mobile phone cameras excell above others. Daylight shots are pretty good among all branded phones.

I agree on the battery part. This is something where we are going to see quantum leap development over the years. Just like we saw with the transformation from HDD to SSD.
