Nitin Gadkari moots Rs 90,000 crore underground ring road for Mumbai

whatever u do just make sure the project finishes on time and dont over run the initial budget .

it must be better to run a tram service in mumbai for local travel

It's actually the standard protocol followed during underground construction. The crust of the area under which the tunnel is being burrowed has to be relieved of all kinds of live loads until proper axial pressure safeguards are in place. This is mainly done to prevent the roof cave-in situations.
I dont know about that. I was in Delhi during metro construction and I know for a fact that no roads are closed when tunnel boring machines are used to dig underground tunnels and lines. Only the area where underground station is being built is closed. Even there they have one lane on each side which is open for traffic.

Gadkari has great ideas for Indian infra. Mumbai really needs world class expressways and highways. Problem of land crunch may be overcome by undergound roads. Boston has the biggest underground road network.
only sensible comment so far in this thread!

the cost might sound too much to many but if you see carefully the contribution that Mumbai's economy makes to our national economy, the return it has been receiving from center is not bigger than a peanut!

Some serious thoughts like this must be evaluated for the makeover of Mumbai.

I don't know about that but i am just quoting what we have read in our books.I am a civil engineering student btw. Also metro tunnels are usually much narrower than road tunnels.Maybe DMRC did it in phases or they found a unique solution to it.

I don't think this idea is quite plausible.Making a stretch of underground road means closing off the entire section until the tunnel roof is axially secured.Too much waste and nightmarish traffic congestion.
Is this true? I don't think they did this with the Delhi Metro's underground stretches.

Kolkata metro is operational since 1984, and even in those days they made the tunnels underneath the main roads and buildings including some very old buildings, and those are wide tunnels with two broad guage lines. New technologies should be more advanced. :)

There I corrected it 8-)

They should build overhead flyovers over the city if they want.. I really don want precious money to be so wasted like this...
Flyovers are not the problem solvers. They just shift the traffic bottle neck from one point to another. Delhi being city of flyovers is experiencing this. Now most of the jams are either at the entry of the flyovers ( 5 lanes converging into 3) or a towards the end where in you will find the ripple effect of some signal ahead or someone want to take a turn just after the flyover. Also flyover come with its disadvantage of occupying lots of space and thus making the space underneath useless. Also it gives very bad scenic view with flyovers ending up paste boards for posters, paints etc.

Another example of overhead blunder is Metro project. It has occupied lots of open space of Delhi and is not a pleasant view to see metro pillars and cement slab on it all over Delhi. All these things should be underground to maintain the natural beauty of the cities etc.

aking a stretch of underground road means closing off the entire section until the tunnel roof is axially secured.
Guess you are still living in old technology. You require to stop traffic at only places where the entry and exit to tunnel exist. all things happen undergroup with advance boring machines.

This is very good animated video to show how these machines work

Another video about Bangalore Metro.

WTF !!!

Which moron came up with this idea! Instead of making an underground Metro these retards are talking about an underground road line :hitwall: ...... the bloody train goes on a bridge !!

Its Alice in Wonderland all over again.

For the last time, building a road and building a metro tunnel are two whole different ball games. You can build a metro by erecting a tunnel structure inside the ground and then building a railway system inside that tunnel.Building a road takes more than just tunneling through the ground.I dont have the fortitude to write about the entire mechanisms about the complexities of underground road building. If you still want more info, kindly refer to Underground Infrastructure by R.K.Goel and Jian Zhao.
