Niqab becoming a flash point in Canada

TORONTO: The niqab worn by Muslim women has become a flash point in Canada, with most people seeking ban on the veil in public. But liberals and the media are comparing the ban demand to a Taliban dress code.

Canada has about one million Muslims in its population of 34 million, and their population is expected to triple in the next two decades.

Barring those from orthodox Middle East countries, a majority of Canadian Muslim women don't wear the hijab or niqab. But the veil is quite visible in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver where most Muslim immigrants live.

The niqab controversy has been triggered by an Egyptian immigrant's refusal to remove her veil in her French language class in Montreal, forcing the school and the provincial Quebec government to ban her.

Toughening its stand on the issue, the government last week ordered that every niqab-clad woman must uncover her face to confirm her identity when applying for her medicare card.

The government also said that it will not entertain requests from niqab-wearing women to demand services by female staff.

The Quebec government has also mooted to banish the niqab from public services.

Describing the government's attempts to banish the niqab 'as pure intolerance - a hunt more common to the pitchfork-wielding redneck anxious to preserve his cultural domination', the Globe and Mail says the opposition to the niqab now goes 'far beyond the ranks of the usual bigots.''

What has further fuelled the debate is a recent Statistics Canada report which says that the country's demography is changing fast in favour of coloured minorities who will become majorities in big cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal in the next two decades.

Canada's changing demographics are definitely impacting people's perception of the niqab issue, according to Morton Weinfeld, chair in Canadian ethnic studies at McGill University in Montreal.

Most Muslim leaders have spoken angrily against the attempts to stop Muslim women from wearing their religious dress code.

Would be good if they Ban it because it will give Muslims a push to Ban/Restrict their entry and they would be bound to Wear Hijab when they Land in an Islamic country.

"When i rome do as romans do"

Sir, can you explain this, which is in red.

Dear i am saying that if they Restrict our Religious believes just because Muslims are in Canada then its fair enough.

But when they would Come into our Countries they would be Bound by Law to wear Hijab no matter they want to wear or Not , as Muslims are bound not to wear hijab as its against their culture and not wearing is against ours.

" So when in Rome do as romans do "

To be a bit honest , it is Pure "Islamophobia" and nothing else , Islam is the Fastest Growing religion in Canada and they nothing but Paranoid.:)

I think there are points to ponder for both sides. My wife wears the Hijab and this is accepted as the norm in UK for a muslim woman.I understand that some women want to wear the niqab, but in public places where there are security concerns, one can see a logical reason for people to be worried. However, women who demand to be seen by a lady doctor, have a justifiable reason to do so , and it should be respected WHEREEVER POSSIBLE. i have highlighted these words as it is not always possible in the health environment. But where possible it should be entertained. The lady in question should accept that it may mean that her appointment may be rescheduled or she might have to wait. In cases of emergency where the examination can not be put off, and is essential , and a lady doctor is not available, the lady should be examined by a male doctor with a chaperone. This is standard practice throughout UK where i work.

I agree with you. Good post Mr. Araz.

Women should be allowed to wear niqab and hijab but when ever their are security concerns they need to remove it. One should be free to follow his or her religon but without compromising the security of others including themselves.

but as I know, Niqab is not a part of Islam.
Even the meaning of hijab is disputed

I agree as long as the relevant authority provides women officers to check these ladies out.

I think in Islam or Islamic countries, the scarf is more a rule to supress a womans sexuality, this kind of rule was common even in older Europe. However, in Canada and other parts of the western world, they view the enforcement for women to wear the scarf as socail suppression and that is what they are working against. Unfortunately for the newer Islamic generation of women, a lot of them , especially when the are brought up in western countries dont want to wear these scarves. But they are forced by their families to do so. I would think that this poses a predicament for Canadian lawmakers, because to ban (suppress) the wearing of the hijab is to go against (suppress) the rights of those who seriously want to wear the hijab.
One major contradiction of the wearing of the hijab I would like to point out, which is quite a mockery (if not hillarious) is that you will find in muslim countries, that women wear the hijab and wear body revealing, tight fitting , sexy clothes. Smoke ciggarettes. Wear heavy make up etc etc!! I mean, where is your sense of righteousness. and then you question the secularity of Canada , at least in Canada we will debate it and after due deliberations a decision will be made, for or against , depending on the decison of the majority . After all muslim families migrating to Canada, must have realized that their children would be influenced in these countries, and if they still dont like it, they are still free to move back to where they have come from. The good think about Canada is that racism is miniscule.
Come to think of it, why arent men forced to wear scarves, if a woman can tempt a man with her sexuality , so can a man tempt a woman. So it should be even handed, Moreover, is this not discrimination.??!!

I agree with you. Good post Mr. Araz.

I can quite understand a womans discomfiture in matters of gynacology, but sometimes, under certain circumstances, what can you do !! All anybody can say here, is at best where you can get a lady doctor get one, or just treat the doctor as a doctor and not a man. I mean you dont have to costrue it as sin..

i think it's Muslims who, in the end, should lobby to have niqab/burqa banned; not just in those countries, but also in our own.

I can't stand the sight of those ninjas. It's purely an ancient Arabian phenomenon; not necessarily Islamic.

To me (and this is my interpretation) --- the woman is a sign of beauty and perfection. She must show her face.

It is the MEN who should keep their gaze down, rather than pressure woman to wear these stupid repressive outfits

of course, if woman wants to wear it --free from pressure --then she should be allowed to do it. We are also free-minded, freedom loving and God-fearing people.
