New US airport policy: No extra screening of Pakistanis, others

Travelers from 14 countries, including Pakistan, that have been home to terrorists, will no longer automatically face extra screening before they fly to the US.

Beginning this month, anyone traveling to the US will instead be screened based on specific information about potential terrorist threats, a senior Obama administration official said. A person would be stopped if he or she matches a description, even if officials do not have a suspect's name, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security issues.

For example, if the US has intelligence about a Nigerian man between the ages of 22 and 32 whom officials believe is a threat or a known terrorist, under the new policy all Nigerian men within that age range will receive extra screening before they are allowed to fly to the US. If intelligence later shows that the suspect is not a terrorist, travelers will not be screened against that description.

The new procedures replace those that went into effect after the attempted bombing of a jetliner en route to Detroit on Christmas Day. Those rules required extra screening, such as full-body pat-downs, for everyone from, or traveling through, any of these 14 countries: Pakistan, Afghanistan, Algeria, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The new terror-screening strategy, to be announced on Friday, is a result of a review ordered by President Barack Obama.

The intelligence-based targeting will be in addition to screening names on terror watch lists. The government's "no fly" list of suspected terrorists, who are banned from flights to, or within, US territory, has about 6,000 names.

A Nigerian man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has been charged with boarding a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day with a bomb hidden in his underwear. One of the reasons the alleged bomber was able to board the flight in Amsterdam was that his name was not on a US terror watch list. However, officials failed to even share a description of the suspected terrorist.

The new policy should significantly decrease the number of innocent travelers from the 14 countries who have been inconvenienced by the extra screening, the official said.

In the past three months, senior US security officials have been meeting with foreign countries to discuss how to improve aviation security, and many countries have adopted enhanced screening methods, including the use of body-scanning machines.

The US does not have the authority to screen passengers in foreign airports. But if air carriers do not agree to follow the US guidelines for international aviation security, they could be fined and potentially banned from operating flights to the US.

They will still stop and screen all South Asians as in their minds we all (including Hindu , Buddhist, Christian etc) have terrorist tendencies. Everytime I go to the States I am delayed by being questioned for 2 hours or so on my reason for travelling alone to the States even though I am there every year practically. Those airport security personnel need to be taught some manners. They are plain rude ! To them any male who looks Indian or Pakistani is a possible threat if travelling alone

Last time I traveled I got kinda lucky. As usual I was stopped for the NSEERS special registration but there were huge problems in clearance of certain Saudis and the line was held up. Snowstorm hit and all flights got canceled as well. I went to sleep on the bench waiting for my turn and when it came after 5 hours of waiting, I was cleared within a minute and there were only 2 passengers left in the entire terminal. The TSA guy didn't check me and I didn't go through customs as well. They just let me go out through employee gate without any backscatter x ray body scans, pat downs or luggage checks.

Anyways, does anybody know that the CAA receives a number of complaints frequently from passengers complaining about the unacceptable pat downs performed by female staff of the ASF?

this is gud. thanks to our FATA members who cut their visit short and came back and thanks to americans for understanding our values.

this selective screening is a lot less worse than screening for all....

Whenever I got to the airport I ALWAYS get selected for so-called "Random-Screening."

I am a United States citizen and this has been happening for the past 6 years on every damn flight.

kewl!!!! it was plain stupid!!

talking about checking at airport... i was stopped by the authorities for questioning during my first visit to UK... i wont blame them as i had 3 restless nights (due to packing) i was fasting (due to ramadan) i had an 8 hour stop at dubai and wasnt able to sleep through out the journey... so definitely i looked like a drug smuggler  anyways the usual questioning began n when the reached the question 'whats you email add?' i said vrsoldiers@blahblah.com... eyes widened... but i told em my father was in army n i wanted to join as well blah blah... they cooled off n let me go the very next minute :)

for all my next visits i dumped my usual haircut for spikes and was never stopped
