Outwardly, the A2 version looks more different compared to the A1 version than the A1 compared to the Type 96G. Nobody knows the specifics, but the internal systems are supposedly quite different as well.

Looks like T-96. It's too small to be a T-99

The armor looks thicker. I'd say it approaches USA's MIA2 Abrams MBT level.

looks like a tank covered in (armour) bricks

Wts the weight?

Is it heavy?

That is probably the ERA layer.

Type-99 doesn't use ERA, at least not on the turret. What's on the glacis is debatable.

Could be composite block then but it does look like ERA.

Whatever it is its armor looks more tougher than any Russian tank.

It's not the thickness of the armor that determines its protection.

The Type 99A2 uses AL2O3 armor, and most of it is still classified. We know that AL2O3 can withstand 9 hits from a T-72 without sustaining any damage.

We also know that the Type 99A2 has ERA combined with it, and that it (just like other Type 99 variants) have an Active Protection System that intercepts incoming projectiles.

Armor composition determines its performance, not size.
