The Kingdom is set to introduce a fleet of new patrol cars with sophisticated new technology to identify people by their number plates and fingerprints. The black and white vehicles will be launched by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif, second deputy premier and interior minister, on Tuesday.
According to a police officer, the new smart cars are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to identify the owner of a car by his number plates. Officers can pass on information to their control room for advice.
The new cars are also equipped with fingerprint readers that determine the status of a suspect and his lawful employer.
Meanwhile, Prince Mohammed recently visited the Asir region to offer his condolences to the families of those soldiers who lost their lives battling the Houthis, accompanied by Prince Mohammed bin Salman, minister of defense, chief of the royal court and special adviser to the custodian of the two holy mosques. They were met at Abha regional airport by Asir Gov. Prince Faisal bin Khalid, Commander of the Southern Zone Maj. Gen. Mutlaq Al-Izamie, the commander of King Khaled Airbase, and several senior, civil and military officials.

Dubai’s smart police cars have 12 eyes on violators

Newly introduced smart patrol car will be mounted with intelligent light bars featuring automatic number plate recognition and 360-degree video recording.

Introducing a new fleet of Smart Patrol cars, Dubai Police will soon have 12 cameras on each of its patrol cars for better surveillance and monitoring. Each smart patrol car will be mounted with intelligent light bars featuring automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and 360-degree video recording.

The cameras will monitor Dubai’s roads in real time and broadcast live video to Dubai Police’s control room. Using a network of police cars, the technology makes it easier to monitor and detect any violations.

“These cars are already in production and eventually the aspiration is to transform the entire fleet with intelligent light bars. The first generation of these cars could only monitor one lane. The latest technology allows all lanes to be monitored at the same time,” explained Russel Hammad, CEO of Zenith Security Systems.

If a wanted car is spotted on Dubai’s roads, the police officer on patrol receives a notification, informing him to take action. Eight cameras on the light bar allow automatic number plate recognition — a technology which allows police to flag vehicles with a history of violations. Four additional cameras provide a 360-degree view around the patrol car.

“A 360 (degree) view around the car can capture and detect violations. This information is relayed in real time to the police control centre. The Dubai Police is very innovative and cutting-edge in its approach to use technology. This is a world first technology and the Dubai Police is the first to implement the intelligent light bar,” said Hammad.

A dedicated speeding camera will also help record violations while the police patrol is on the move. Speeding fines will be issued in near real time with offenders receiving SMS notifications within five to 10 minutes of the speeding offence.

Speaking with Khaleej Times, Ramiz Yusuf, head of Maintenance for Satellite Services at the Dubai Police, said: “We do not have to print a fine anymore. The fine can be issued immediately for any violation recorded on the camera.”

Police vehicles have been fitted with cameras which are linked to the operations room.

The cameras are linked to the operations room. Both the duty officer in the operations room and the officer driving the vehicle can operate the camera.

New mobile cameras to monitor accidents have been installed on patrol vehicles, said a top police official.
At a press conference held on Sunday, Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police, announced the implementation of cameras on patrol units with 160 police vehicles having already been fitted out.

The cameras are linked to the operations room. Both the duty officer in the operations room and the officer driving the vehicle can operate the camera.

"As soon as the police officer starts the engine, the camera automatically films. The duty officer at the operations room can have access to watch live footage of any of the installed cameras in addition to controlling it," said Lt Gen Dahi. The purpose of this device is to have live footage of traffic accidents and to enhance the decision-making of the officers at the operations room.

"The footage will give them a clear image and magnitude of the accident. The footage is also recorded and saved in the archive, he said. The film could be used as a teaching tool for students at the police academy, for awareness campaigns in schools, and as evidence in courts, said Lt Gen Dahi.

The technology was launched in 2008 and was put on trial for months. The first 160 cameras were installed in June of 2009. This year 100 additional cameras will be installed.

When asked if this device could be used as a monitoring device to ensure that officers were carrying out their duties, he said: "This mentality and philosophy already exists among the officers. They have learned from experience how vigilant we are about them following the rules."

He said a police officer was caught out when he was assigned to patrol an area close to Abu Dhabi, but the system continuously showed he was stationed in Al Karama.

"We ordered for the matter to be investigated. When the police officer was asked about his location he lied saying he was in his area of duty. When a patrol unit was sent to Al Karama, his vehicle was seen parked there," he said, adding that police officers were now more aware.

Big brother or better police work? New technology automatically runs license plates ... of everyone - Metro - The Boston Globe

"The usefulness of the automated license plate reader as an investigative tool springs from the astounding number of license plates the units can scan and record. With an array of high-speed cameras mounted on police cruisers snapping pictures, these systems are designed to capture up to 1,800 plates per minute, even at high speeds and in difficult driving conditions.

“I’ve had my [license plater reader] correctly scan plates on cars parked bumper-to-bumper when I’m driving full speed,”
