RIYADH: A new military transport aircraft manufactured locally will be tested next year after 18 months of development and design.
This is according to Prince Turki bin Saud bin Mohammad, president of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology.
The AN-132 is the result of cooperation with Ukraine and would see 80 planes produced, partially in the former Soviet nation, he said.
The AN-132 is a modern version of the military transport plane AN-32, with modern engines and electronics that would make it more fuel-efficient and able to take off and land in various environments, he was quoted as saying by a local publication.
This coincides with Saudi Arabia signing five agreements with several companies affiliated with the Saudi Company for Development and Technical Investments, which is completely owned by the Public Investment Fund.
The agreements were signed with leading technology and manufacturing companies to establish five companies specializing in military and civil industries, satellite and radar production, and clean energy.
Prince Turki said two of the five agreements would see the manufacture of Black Hawk and Antonov aircraft, which would see a significant transfer of technology, and the production of these planes in the Kingdom.
This partnership is an expansion of a current agreement between KACST and Antonov to develop and manufacture AN-132 planes.
KACST would own 50 percent of the intellectual property, he said.
A Saudi company combining Technical Space Company and US Digital Globe has been set up to manufacture and market a number of small satellites for space photography. KACST aims to develop and manufacture six satellites.
Another deal was signed with Aselsan Turkish company to develop and manufacture radars and electro-visual devices in the Kingdom.
The pact includes training of staff. The company would provide maintenance and development services to the military and security sectors.

Antonov: bankruptcy not an issue
Henk Koopmans 01/31/2016
A bankruptcy Antonov is not on the agenda according to the company in a news item on the website of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine. Earlier this week, it was announced that the Government of Ukraine decided to declare bankruptcy Antonov.

Antonov consists of three divisions, Antonov State Company, Kharkiv State Aircraft Manufacturing Company (KSAMC) and state enterprise Plant 410 of Civil Aviation. To increase the efficiency within the company, the Ukrainian government decided last year to accommodate the departments Ukroboronprom, the Ukraine Defense Industry. In June, the components were fully placed with the manufacturer.

Antonov is still active and full production of the aircraft is operational. In addition to building aircraft Antonov conducts research into structures. Also, certification, series production, testing and maintenance tasks that Antonov targets. All products are supplied under the Antonov brand.

Air Transportation: Antonov Dies In Ukraine
January 28, 2016: Russia has decided to abandon development of An-70, four-engine turboprop transport that began development in the 1980s in Ukraine when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. The An-70 is dead because of the war with Ukraine which led to Russia cancelling its 2012 order for 60 An-70s. These were to be delivered between 2014 and 2020. The canceled An-70s will be replaced by a smaller number of the new Russian Il-76MD-90 transports. Thirty of these have already been delivered and the Russians are satisfied with the latest version of the elderly Il-76. Still the Russian Air Force believes it needs at least another fifty Il-76s to replace the cancelled An-70s and rapidly aging Cold War era Il-76s.

This is a sad end to Antonov, which is now bankrupt and being dissolved. In 2008, after two years of stalling, Russia agreed to put up the needed $300 million to revive the An-70 development program. Since the beginning the An-70 has been pitched as a low cost alternative for nations needing C-130 or A400M type medium military transports.

No different from the Russians making the IL-476, replacing the IL-76 before it.
