while sulimani killing has many dimensions, I believe this killing was also used by the ruling regime to bury the domestic anger in anti-American rhetoric.

Three days long funeral procession and addition of "we slapped USA" narrative to it will act as a powerful drug for the masses. Anti-government sentiment will be in deep slumber for now. I don't think there will be any large scale protest in Iran in the near future.

Ukrainian Plane shooting can create some problems for the regime though.

Iran is divided into 2 different kind of people:
- Westernized/Secularists (20%)
- Islamized/Conservatives (80%)

These are just my rough estimate and offcourse anyone can rightly disagree with it.

The point I'm trying to make is that, some/most people in the west think that only Iranian regime is Islamic while majority are secularists and all they need is a little push so that Islamists can be over thrown. Little do they know or would like to know is that Iranian regime is ruling thanks to majority masses who align with them. So, some protests here and there and every now or then won't make any difference especially when regime rules with iron fist - something which majority approves

I'll disagree based on the fact that it isn't a binary choice. There are other options between fearing the Hisbah and being as liberal as the West.

The population demographics alone point to major reform if not now in the next 5 years, as the old guard dies off. The youth, as in my country, are always pushing for reform. And Iran has an extremely young median age.

We are again on the brink of war. Any Assad-style mowing down of protestors that gets streamed or leaked, and Israel and KSA will finally get their wish.
