New Moore no more as island disappears

A tiny island in the Bay of Bengal, claimed by both India and Bangladesh, has disappeared beneath rising seas, the BBC is reporting.

Scientists in India say the uninhabited territory, known as New Moore Island to the Indians and South Talpatti Island to the Bangladeshis, is now completely under water according to latest satellite images.

There are fears that other nearby islands could also vanish as sea levels rise, though New Moore was always threatened, as even in its heyday it was never more than two metres above sea level.

Next is what?

Another indian BS spread through indian media infiltration. Talpotti still few feet under water and fundamental issue of indian occupation of Bnagladesh territory (with or without island) still out there. This is another indian ploy to divert people attention from indian occupation.

Deflection from not only occupation but also dilly-dully on giving right-share of Teesta water.

Cross-posting from another thread:

Well, a few weeks ago I was debating with a Bangladeshi (and an Indian) about this Talpatti island and India's position on it. At one point I had made the following comment:

It is precisely because of complexity of geo-politics, neither country wants to go for neutral arbitrator. A good example would be Pakistan's misadventure with Indus-Water treaty. The verdict of the neutral arbitrator has left Pakistan with no room for negotiation and extracting any concession from India. In a sense, they have been left with a fait accompli. South Talpatty comes close to the scenario. If today BD agrees for neutral arbitrator, BD will flat out plain loose. Thats why you will not catch GoB raising the decibel on Talpatty except for routine protests and claims. India too doesn't want to make too much noise, because in the long run, the island may just disappear completely. Thats why it is almost always in the back-burner and gets a mention in the passing.

Damn. Now I know what it feels like to be Nostradamus.

That depends on how many feet it is under water. Most of our soldiers are 6 feet. So if water level is below 6 feet, we would still be there. But we will have to pack up & sail out once the water level crosses 6 ft mark

I am happy to note that you did not brag your soldiers to be taller than Himalayas or at least they are 60 feet tall. Whatever may be the height of these Indians, they have to learn swimming just like our 3 feet 3 inches Lilliputian soldiers, who learn swimming before they learn to walk, to survive in the BoB.

As President Zia said before, South Talpatty belongs to BD and it will remain so in the future. Now, island or no island, the sea territory belongs to BD. It always was ours and it always will remain so.

Taller than Himalayas & deeper than the ocean? No - that's something else

And it was always yours? Forget it - it was only Zia's claim. This island created (supposedly) by a hurricane during late 1960s. A survey in 1980s showed that it was on the Indian side of the middle line of the Hariabhanga river flow, the water boundary between India & BD. That is what made India claim the island.

If BDeshis call it Indian's bluff then they would show THEIR neutral arbitrators in world court, where BDeshis would be played by Indian mights thus BDeshis would stay as no-winner against Indians until they achieve parity in power.

Why dont you agree to a joint survey offered by Bangladesh? What stops you to legaly claim that as yours by settling that through a mutual survey?

. . .
Joint survey of an Indian land?

IF it were indian land then why indians are jumping in joy and all out to spread deception that issue solved??? Just check out your face in the mirror - shame is written all over it.

You are trying to steal our south Talpatty, and are now stealing fish from our lakes. Where do you think South talpatty lies? It is within our territory.Click the link below that proves my point.

You never get tired of peddling your horsemanure. Do you? Remember this thread?

Here's something to refresh your memory.

Here is one more amateurish attempt to illustrate GoI's position. The image below clearly shows the silting indicating the thalweg ('the deepest continuous line along the valley or waterway'), and hence the flow of the Hariabhanga river [red arrows]. Also there is a clear border (for the lack of better word) between the water of Hariabhanga and Raimangal rivers.

For those who do not know, where two countries share the same river that runs along their mutual border, the international boundary is deemed to run along the thalweg (i.e. the deepest point of the river). Regardless of eastwatch's cartoonish illustration from wiki, the above satellite image indicates that the Talpatty island falls (fell ?) to the east of Hariabhanga river, i.e. on the Indian side.

The original HiRes image of the entire Sundarban can be found here (4 mb)

But really, what are we fighting about. The island, apparently, no longer exists.:partay:

Most ppl would be relieved that a totally useless & avoidable cause for friction has been put away.
