Image of Eos Chaos region of Mars taken by Mars color camera on board ISRO's Mars Orbiter Mission on 5-2-2015 at a spatial resolution of 220 m from an altitude of 4403 km. Eos Chaos is located at eastern part of Valles Marineris region. Grabens/Fracture patterns at the edges of Valles Marineris are clearly seen at this resolution. Images at this coarse resolution are useful for understanding geological processes at regional scale.

India's Frugal Mars Mission Extended by Six Months

Bengaluru: India's famously frugal Mars mission has been extended by around six months thanks to a surplus of fuel on board the spacecraft, the country's space agency said.

The Mars Orbiter Mission spacecraft had been scheduled to wrap up its mission this month after India in September became the first Asian nation to reach the Red Planet, all on a shoe-string budget.

But scientists said the unmanned spacecraft would remain in orbit to study the planet's atmosphere and its surface after burning less fuel than expected over the last six months.

"As the... Mars Orbiter has sufficient fuel to last longer than it was intended earlier, its mission has been extended for another six months," said Devi Prasad Karnik, director of the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation.

"The five scientific instruments on board the spacecraft will continue to collect data and relay them to our deep space network centre here for analysis," Mr Karnik added.

The mission cost just $74 million, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has quipped was less than the estimated $100 million budget for the sci-fi Hollywood blockbuster "Gravity".

India has been trying to keep up with neighbouring giant China, which has poured billions of dollars into its own space programme.

Of the five instruments on board, the spacecraft's camera has been the most active, capturing images of the planet's surface, including valleys, mountains, craters, clouds and dust storms.

The other four have been conducting various experiments to study the Martian surface, including its mineral composition and to scan its atmosphere for methane gas, which comes mainly from living organisms.

Yes..yes...but our expensive imaging satellites are still going strong after 9 years in orbit.

True that! Of course there is no comparison but its good for propaganda!
Atleast we beat the United States at cost. India cannot really afford super expensive missions as of now with super heavy satellites and payloads. USA spends millions of dollars in researching imaging technologies alone.
But we made optimum use of our limited resources and that is quite an achievement we'd like to believe! :)

They spend 600 billion dollars on military budget and NASA is not included (18 billion $) .

Pretty much a retard performance by them i'd say . if we invested that much money , our people would be landing on venus in 20 years

Gravity might have earned more than it spent , that's another matter..

Few on board sensors may be foreign equipments , that too is another matter

What we achieved is, we don't have to keep learning from others, now we can learn ourselves and help others with the knowledge we got..

Beautiful images, love the resolution and clarity.

Well since it is first satellite, the design life was kept to approximately one year and maybe in future, longevity can be achieved. All space agencies must co-operate in missions like these as this prevents duplication of efforts and cuts cost. ISRO definitely has shown its capability.

Our govt. needs to step up its efforts :D you guys are going really fast
I don't know if current international scenario allows to, but may be INDIA and IRAN can co-operate in this field. Iran (& other countries in region for that matter) can gain a lot from India's presence in Satellite market and as past has shown, Indian satellite network is quite reliable and affordable services.
I also wish Iranian space program Good Luck!

You nailed it bro.India has 1 billion$ fund and China has 2 billion $ for their agency.Yet both of them performed very well with their meagre sources. If our ISRO has 18 billiion $ fund we would have been in Moon or Mars with an established scientif colony.

Yes it also proves that money isn't everything when it comes to High end research. How glad are we that despite indifferent economic conditions, India nurtured its space program since 1960s and the fruits of that are here for all of us to enjoy in form of one of the biggest satellite networks in the world which has led to phenomenal growth in areas like Telecom, Television DTH industry, Weather forecasting etc.
