Japanese chopsticks are pointed because their diet contains uncooked fish which is easier to pick up using pointed chopsticks.
Did you find metal chopsticks in Korea? They are used because Korean culture have a habit of eating roasted meat (like bbq) and wooden chopsticks just won't do.

It could be a pure coincidence, but there is a chance that his ancestors might have come from China. Kan, pronounced jian in Mandarin, is a Chinese surname that finds its roots in Shandong province.
According to a Chinese dictionary of surnames, during the Spring and Autumn period in China (476-770 BC), when China was ruled by a feudal system, there was a Song Kingdom. In that kingdom, there was a county named Jian governed by a feudal lord who later took the countys name as his own.
There are other theories being discussed on the Internet in China as to how Jian became a surname in China. One based on a legend says that during the Spring and Autumn period, a noblemans family that had displeased the imperial court and was on the run to escape execution hid with the help of a bush called jian菅and narrowly evaded the man hunt. After that incident, the noblemans family started calling themselves Jian.
Among notable Jians throughout Chinas history:
菅禹: Jian Yu, a renowned official during the Han dynasty
菅崇嗣:Jian Congsi, a famous official during theTang Dynasty
菅怀礼: Jian Huaili, an administrative official in Hubei, Hunan and Guangxi provinces during the Ming Dynasty.
If Mr. Kans surname indeed has ties to Shandong province, it may have made the journey to Japan many centuries ago, so any influence on his policy views isnt all that likely. Still, his name brings a reminder of the historical and cultural ties of East Asias two top powers at a time when their relationship is increasingly important. Ahead of his appointment as premier, Mr. Kan, while underscoring the importance of the U.S.-Japan relationship, also highlighted the importance of China to Japan, calling the relationship with its neighbor equally important as the relationship with the U.S.
The surname Jian菅 is not common in China and at least one Chinese observer, a blogger named Jian菅, welcomed Mr. Kans ascendance to Japans top political position for that reason. The blogger said he has often had trouble conveying his somewhat unusual family name to people he hasnt met before, but Mr. Kans celebrity might solve that.

I just ran some search and found the following blog article as well ( in Chinese).
Basicly the Chinese blogger of the article says, if I understand him correctly, that he graduated from the same university in Tokyo as Kan and met him in person. When he was young in the university, Kan was the student head of Maoist.

You seem to miss the big picture of this thread (and it's got nothing to do with Japan's foreign policy toward the US which is completely diverged from this thread).
If a white American man/woman who is Russian descent is elected to be the xth US president. Wouldn't you at least expect his/her foreign policy toward Russia would be a little or more conciliatory?
The problem with some of these f&cking Japanese PMs is the visitation of Yasukuni Shrine (where hardcore criminals like Hideki Tojo, Iwane Matsui, etc., are buried).
The Japanese government should have the courage to remove these f&cking hardcore criminals from the f&cking shrine.
