In a telephone call to the Pakistani Foreign Office on Tuesday, India's foreign secretary apologised to his Islamabad counterpart over the mistreatment of a Pakistani diplomat in New Delhi, diplomatic sources told DawnNews.

Pakistan's First Secretary (Trade) Zargam Raza and his driver Haider were beaten up by a group of men while the former was returning home from the High Commission Monday evening.

High Commission spokesman Manzoor Ali Memon told journalists in Dehli on Monday that two men on a motorbike hurled abuses at the diplomat. When Mr Raza objected, he was thrashed by some men. Both first secretary and his driver suffered serious injuries, the FO spokesman had said.

On Tuesday, the Indian foreign secretary called his Pakistani counterpart, Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani, and apologised for the treatment meted out to the Pakistani official in New Delhi.

Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani conveyed Pakistan's concerns to the Indian secretary over the mistreatment of it's diplomat in Delhi.

According to sources, the Indian foreign secretary assured Islamabad that a thorough investigation of the incident would be carried out by Indian authorities. The secretary also assured that security for Pakistani diplomats in New Delhi would be tightened to ensure any such incidents do not recur in the future.

One of the suspects involved in the incident has been taken into custody by Indian authorities, said the Indian foreign secretary.

Tis PAkistani diplomat had a very bad day:

First he got beaten by a biker ... then 4 hours later his car got hit by a truck. Poor Guy.

Well... Now this thing is over.... If we couldnt provide the security inside our country then the best thing to do is apologize and look how to avoid this in future....

if the same will happened in Pakistan the whole media will run this news thousands times and lots of interviews even the victim interviews too .. but over here our media just break the news and then silence :)

But indian media did take it seriously as usual.... and they covered it extensively....

DAWN seems to be reporting the Pakistani version of things.

Although it was the biker who was abusive, he was all alone with a woman behind him who got hit by the car and fell down. Then he assaulted the driver and also roughed up the diplomat. This is the police version.

Anyway, it was the responsibility of India to provide protection to the diplomat so the apology may not be the wrong thing to do. However , it would be interesting to the see the language used by the Indian foreign office for this "apology".

DAWN is spicing up things for its local audience.

if this had happened to the indian diplomat!

the Indians would have done soooooooooooooooooooooooo much drama like it was STAR PLUS or some DEVDAS set! they would have made the ganga river over flow with their crocodile tears!

but we have a big heart so we said fine let it go. and didn't beat up their diplomat like they did when their terrorist in jail was killed by some other inmates!

Instead of taking cheap shots at India.. Why dont you just appreciate the reaction from our side?

Its not as if everyday a foreign diplomat is attacked? We apologized.Take the apology and move on.

Remind me when a day goes in pakistan without a bomb blast.
