New BrahMos can cover 290 km in two minutes | Deccan Chronicle

The new version of the BrahMos missile, now under development in the city, can deal a lethal blow to targets as far away as 290 km in two minutes. The hypersonic version of the BrahMos achieved a maximum speed of Mach 6.5 or six-and-a-half times the speed of sound during laboratory experiments here. Before it is ready for field trials in 2016, DRDO teams involved in the BrahMos Project want to increase the speed to Mach 7 or 8,365 km per hour.

There are two versions of the BrahMos missile: supersonic and hypersonic (BrahMos II). When the BrahMos supersonic missile achieved Mach 2.8 during its test flight on August 12 this year, it became the fastest cruise missile in the world. At Mach 7, the hypersonic version will be way ahead of all cruise missiles developed so far.

“We have completed tests up to Mach 6.5,” BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited chief executive officer and managing director A. Sivathanu Pillai said in Chennai. The target is to achieve Mach 7, he added. However, for BrahMos to achieve hypersonic speeds in real field trials scientists need to make certain changes to its components. A new engine has to be designed, which can withstand such high speeds and high temperature. Moreover, there will be a lot of vibration and the components need to withstand it. India wants to integrate the BrahMos with the Sukoi-30MK-I for the air launch. According to defence officials here, trial flights are likely to be conducted in the new year. The BrahMos is being manufactured at Pilani, Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad.

Does it need to hit a moving target ??
The target won't have time time to think of even evading, forget about moving away.... It would be like 25-10 sec, to evacuate its crew or pray to god.

@Darky totaly agree with you. Brahmos is 290km range and when the target gets locked on by brahmos it won't give its target to react.... Even if enemy sees the incoming brahmos on radars it won't let them move away as the brahmos speed is what makes brahmos so much deadly.... But brahmos on sukhoi-30MKI is what will be the most deadly combination....

U forgot to mention how deadly will it be at sea in our arihants and scorpene subs with AIP !!

Destroyers and frigates can be sunk in the blink of an eye with that !!

300km ranged missile on subs is not a big task .
Its a game changer if it can be on aircrafts.

of course buddy !! I was just highlighting another area where it can be highly deadly. On MKIs ofc it will have advantage of position/speed/manoeuvrability but from subs it will have the advantage of less susceptibility to detection of the launch platform itself.

FYI BrahMos-II has majority Indian participation; totally different from BrahMos-1. Testing Mach 7 is not joke. Russia didn't hand us the ramjet tech but there is a lot more going behind the screens that we don't know. How do you think we are able to test a hypersonic missile? If you're thinking that Chinese actually tested something of their own without "learning", you're so out of track.

Just pray that this comes in really soon. We need this very badly here in NE.
