Its quite logical. An infantry weapon brought into service in the 90s should have had a life of at least 30-40 years in service. INSAS certainly will not. Bringing into service an individual weapon in the 90s and then having to replace it in 15-20 years is certainly not cost effective any which way one looks at it, but that is not even the main point. The two issues you bring up would be the basic, fundamental requirements (specially if the rifle was still being worked on in the 90s when the capabilities you talk about were available in systems like Steyr and others) that would need to go into any development program for an individual weapon specially one that is planned for force-wide induction. The fallback plan has been to induct an even older design (AK-47s) for use with units involved in operations in built up areas etc. To any observer, the problems seems to be that the weapon system did not meet the requirements of the service and thus is facing replacement.

Mate, the INSAS will have served for 25-28 years by the time the last versions are phased out which is pretty close to your lowest estimate (30 years). Don't write off the INSAS just like that. The INSAS is being phased out because of the IA's much larger modernisation project (F-INSAS) which seeks to replace or upgrade almost every single piece of kit the IA currently uses right now including the AR.


The case with Pakistan is completely different as the use of the G3 is necessarily because it is the best weapon out there but because they can't afford any better. India has the funds to replace their main AR when nessercary, Pakistan simply doesn't so they are stuck with the G3 which has its flaws and is arguably outdated.


The replacment (my hope/bet is ARX-160) will be state of the art, lighter, modular, multi-cal, will come with more accessories as standard (red-*** sights, flashlights,IR/laser illuminators etc) etc


A major reason behind this replacement is the IA is seeking to do away with 2 outdated ARs in one foul swoop ie the INSAS (5.56mm) and AK, used for CT/CI ops (7.62mm). With the new AR there can be standard training procedures, standard logisitcs, standard maintenance etc


It makes sense, no?

Trichy Assault Rifle (TAR) anyhow is being made for supplying it to Paramilitary forces who wanted an AK like weapon rather than INSAS. Proving itself as main assault weapon for IA was never its goal.

As a guy who only operate conventional firearm I have a bias toward bulpup design, but seeing India have an experience with the TAR 21 I suggest buying them. That or the Beretta ARX

Over all the INSAS rifle is a major disappointment and while this study is purely academic and has no bearing on the end user, I think it's all I've been calling it all these years- An over weight, complicated, over priced, mediocre rifle.

In the end it shoots- fairly accurately and with reasonable reliability but its plagued by shitty quality and needless refinements of dubious value.
