It's always the army, ISI who were calling the shots, and dealing with the TTP, as said the umpteenth time by IK.

Talks and deal are different than having an opinion about TTP.

IK said talk to them, separate the hardcore criminals from those who were fighting because of ideology, brainwashing, they can be persuaded to join the mainstream.

This should be the solution, instead of killing all.

Ideally that is the way to go, eliminating just the hardcore element.

Any plan has to be part of a comprehensive effort of development (carrots) and effective push back against miscreants with clear red lines (sticks), at which point all miscreants will be dealt with the full force of the law.

The fear of “over-negotiating” is giving the impression to the TTP that they can do their dastardly deeds and in a matter of a few months or years be accepted back into the fold with another amnesty deal. All the while the instability is wasting the precious time that could have been used to build up the economy and end the appeal of these miscreants in the first place.

The TTP are primarily drug smugglers and criminals trying to make a buck, so a strategy that has an economic complements for those that live within the law is crucial for the success of COIN in KPK.

At least IK has come to this realization now, but I hope others realize that any strategy has to be a whole of government strategy, which has to have both carrots and sticks.
