The Netherlands is to order 14 Boeing CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters from the United States, Dutch defence minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert has told the House of Representatives.

The Netherlands currently operates 17 Chinooks, 11 of the old CH-47D model and six copies of the CH-47F modified for the requirements of the Dutch military. The 14 new CH-47F helicopters will replace these 11 older CH-47Ds and will see the total Dutch Chinook fleet rise from 17 to 20. All the Dutch Chinooks are operated by the Royal Netherlands Air Force's 298th Squadron at Gilze-Rijen.

The Netherlands had previously requested to buy 17 CH-47s from the US, according to a US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announcement confirming congressional approval for the proposed sale on 23 March. This proposed sale was valued at USD1.05 billion.

According to Hennis-Plasschaert, the purchase of the 14 CH-47Fs will cost EUR838 million (USD937 million), lower than the Netherlands Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) proposed EUR915 million budget. Although the decision has now been taken to purchase the helicopters, the actual order will not be placed until December in order to take advantage of the economies of scale generated by the US's second multiyear procurement package (MYII) for the CH-47F.

.
Unfortunately we can't afford them, but if we could, they would really be something.

Having seen them fly fully loaded, in hellish summer close to 300km/hr these birds are really impressive!

The utility of these choppers was discussed during the rescue operations of the 2005 earthquake....but unfortunately they are pretty expensive to maintain and operate...

Dutch to acquire 14 more CH-47F rotorcraft

  • 08 SEPTEMBER, 2015
  • BY: ANNO GRAVEMAKER
The Dutch defence ministry is to acquire 14 new Boeing CH-47F transport helicopters, in an expansion of its existing rotorcraft capabilities.

Recognising the Chinook’s importance in missions such as deploying quick reaction forces and humanitarian assistance, the Dutch air force has decided to retire its 10 ageing CH-47Ds – which were delivered from 1995 – and upgrade its existing six F-model examples, which entered use from 2013.

The defence ministry initially explored the option of acquiring the new aircraft in its preferred CH-47F (NL) configuration, but the budget for this exceeded the available funds. As a result, it will buy the US Army’s F-model Chinook during the service’s second multi-year procurement phase, with aircraft to be in the common avionics architecture system standard. It intends to sign a letter of offer and acceptance during December, with the procurement to be completed via Washington’s Foreign Military Sales framework.

Following their delivery from 2019, the Dutch aircraft will receive some modifications in the USA to meet the nation’s operational demands and certification standards. These will include installing crash-protected seats in the cockpit and cabin, and a VHF radio to enable secure communications with ground forces. Self-protection and icing detection equipment, a fast rope insertion and extraction system and an emergency locator transmitter will also be provided, along with a piloting function for its forward-looking infrared system.

The Netherlands’ total budget for the acquisition is €915 million ($1 billion), which also includes the cost of modernising the current six CH-47Fs to the same standard.
