Aug 6, 2016- Chinese experts have said the much-touted railway link between Nepal and China through the Himalayan highland “is economically and technologically feasible”.

A report carried by China Daily on Friday says the country has accumulated technology and experience to build a rail link between the Tibet autonomous region and the South Asian subcontinent.

According to the newspaper, a Himalayan train ride at more than 100kmph speeds at the foot of the world’s highest snow-capped mountains is no longer just a dream.

The construction of a railway crossing the Himalayan Mountains is now economically and technologically feasible,” the newspaper quoted Zong Gang, deputy director of the Science and Technology Department at Beijing University of Technology, as saying.

The Gyirong (Kerung) port lying at the Nepal-China border stands at an altitude of 2,800 meters above the sea level. The Gyirong mountain pass to Nepal lies at around 1,800 meters, making the railway geographically feasible.

Lhasha and Xigaze, the two major cities of Tibet lying at an altitude of 3,700 meters and 3,800 meters above the sea level respectively, already have railway connectivity.

According to the news report, while Nepal hopes that China can connect the port with Kathmandu, for China, the railway line will help boost economic, cultural and religious communications with Nepal as part of the Belt and Road initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Although China has more than 19,000km of high-speed railways with a capacity to travel at speeds up to 350kmph, the railway line starting from Xigaze in Tibet to a land port in Gyirong will not be a high-speed one. The Xigaze-Gyirong railway line, whose construction is supposed to be completed by 2020, will have up to 100kmph speed.

Building rail links is the most powerful way to help Tibet open up to South Asian countries, the same news report quoted Chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region government Losang Jamcan as saying.

According to the report, Zhou Yuhui, a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, said: “While bringing tourists and businesses to Gyirong, which will help local people to escape poverty, the China-Nepal railway will also help to make people more willing to integrate into modern life.”

Zhou had recently made a field visit to the Nepal-China border.

Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang had agreed to cooperate in several areas, including the transportation sector, during the former’s official visit to Beijing in March this year.

Nepal we're coming to you

It is no problem.

We have already created many engineering miracles, see cross sea bridge, cross mountain bridge etc. This is just a new one to be added and I also expect the project coming to true earlier.

Please go building and conquering.

IMHO, this Nepal-China railway is technologically feasible, no question about this.

China's infrastructure building capability is second to none.

However, this railway may not be economically feasible.

The volume of trade may not be large enough to justify the cost of building it.

Nice Development for Chinese and Nepal people ! :enjoy:

So, in the Future Nepal people don't need to Worry, If Indian Bullied and Embargo them again.

With rail connectivity, China and Nepal will not only have a great economical, cultural exchange and bring Chinese and Nepali people even more closer but it will also rewrite the geopolitical equation and the balance of power on this region, Nepal will no longer be at the mercy of India even if not got bullied by them, we will deliver fuel and commodity by train to fix Nepal problems.

On Tourism side, when people travel to Tibet, they can extend their trip into Nepal to visit the birth place of Buddhism and of course Mount Everest or vice versa. Let hope China to start the construction soon

Nepal needs it more than China. However, in the long run China will also benefit from this project. This will reduce Nepal's dependency on india for trade. For China it will produce another ally in the region. The question is, will india allow this to go on?

What can India do to stop this?

All countries in South Asia will be brought into China's orbit and India can do nothing to stop it.

You underestimate indian influence in the region. At present if you think BD is heading towards Chinese orbit you must be blind to the situation in BD. Most Chinese people are utterly ignorant of what's been going on in BD, this is why they talk as if BD is in the Chinese orbit but when people from BD speak that way I find it hard to believe.

Not now but in 1-2 decades.

China is not in a position to wipe out Indian influence all across the sub-continent yet.

Do you think indian influence in BD has come to this point naturally? In BD anti-indian sentiment is the norm yet india managed to outsmart the anti-indian politicians like Khaleda and that is how india has established her influence. Khaleda and the likes of her were in power for decades but they had no clue whatsoever how india was infiltrating every aspect of BD politics let alone preventing it. There's a great similarity in how you think and how anti-indian elements in BD work and the clever indians take advantage of it. If this trend goes on BD won't be entering the Chinese orbit in a century and you're talking about decades.

Yeah you are so clever and other people so stupid.

I wouldn't say is China's interest to bring all SA into it orbit but to have a friendlier relation with all include India, we don't want to be perceived that we have plan to contain and encircle India as they're eager to use US, Japan, Vietnam and Philippine against China.

It's wise for India and China to cooperate to bring prosperity to this region, imagine if China rail extend to Nepal, then India and Bangladesh, we will have tremendous economy exchange, it will be a win-win for all.

That is China's plan and will benefit all of Asia minus a few useless traitors.

Will the arrogant Indians want to co-operate is the question?
