Star Report

Police yesterday seized a huge cache of grenades and explosive materials from the Chittagong house of two militant suspects arrested over Tuesday's attack on a police checkpoint in Comilla.

On information gleaned from the two -- Mahmud Hasan, 24, and Jasim, 19 -- law enforcers raided the house on the ground floor of a two-story building at Mirsharai around 11:00pm on Tuesday.

The raid continued overnight and ended around 4:30pm yesterday, police said.

The seized items are 29 grenades, huge bomb-making materials, including 280 packets of metal balls (each packet contains 100 balls) and 40 packets of explosive gel, and nine machetes. Five black panjabis and a banner inscribed with the word “Allahu” in Arabic were also found.

The grenades were locally made with high explosives, Nur-e-Alam Mina, superintendent of Chittagong police, told The Daily Star.

The arrested are members of militant outfit “Neo JMB,” said Mohibul Islam, deputy commissioner of DMP's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.

“The arrestees are mid-ranking leaders of Neo JMB. They collected the explosives and bomb-making materials for large-scale subversive activities,” said another CTTC official who participated in the drive.

A key leader of the outfit Maynul Islam Musa, who escaped arrest during a drive at a Ashkona hideout on December 24 last year in the capital, used to visit the house, the official said, asking not to be named.

The recovery comes amid law enforcers' claims that the group is on back foot following some preemptive drives in which some of its top leaders were killed or arrested. Those killed include Bangladesh-born Canadian citizen Tamim Chowdhury, said to the the chief coordinator of the group.

Briefing journalists around 1:30pm, the SP said Mahmud Hasan rented two flats at the building on February 1, introducing himself as a clothes trader at Jorarganj on Chittagong-Dhaka Highway.

Once inside, law enforcers found no furniture in either of the flats.

The grenades were defused by the bomb disposal unit of Chittagong Metropolitan Police. Later both the flats were sealed, the SP added.

The arrestees gave misleading information about their identity and addresses. Hasan told police that he was from Patiya upazila in Chittagong, but police found it to be false, he said.

Building owner Md Redwan, 45, said that while renting the flats Hasan said he and his brother will live in one flat while his sister, her husband and their four-year-old child in the other.

Redwan, also former joint secretary general of Mirsharai municipal BNP, said he sometimes saw Hasan's “sister” and her “husband”.

“But they remained inside the house most of the time … I often talked to Hasan…he told me he is from Lohagara upazila in Chittagong.”

During one conversation, Hasan told Redwan that he would bring his wife to the flat in March.

On February 27, Hasan's sister, her husband and their kid left the flat, said Redwan, adding, “The last time I spoke with him was on Monday when I gave him the electricity bill.”

Then around Tuesday midnight, police knocked on his door and asked him to open open the two flats Hasan rented. At the time, police closed the doors of the five other flats from outside and opened those in the morning, said Redwan and a tenant.

Around 11:30am on Tuesday, police came under a crude bomb attack when they stopped a bus at Kutumbopur checkpoint. The bomb did not explode and no one was hurt.

Law enforcers then opened fire, injuring one. He was identified as Jasim.

Locals caught Hasan and beat him up when he was trying to flee.

A backpack, containing several handmade bombs, was seized from Hasan's possession.

The two were later detained.

I have an interesting theory about present scenario of BD. Its called, failed attempt to hide the fish by spinach. Man how many and how long will this terrorist drama continue. Seems like they wont ever diminish. And present gov will somehow keep the terrorist/jongi news afloat one way or another. Why not media go through the backgrounds of so called JMBs.
Is it helpful for BD? For these groups BD people are harassed internationally and buyers not interested to land in BD. Maybe it helps AL short term to stay in power, internationally and nationally distracts people away from awami misrule. Its huge. You cant hide it. Thats corruption, illegitimacy, theft, robbery, extortion, money laundering, killings, brutality by Awami party affiliates and police, anti nation agreements from highest level, mismanagement of institutions, non useful projects to keep looting year long and looting the financial institutions etc.

Imagine all these crimes are fish trying to hide under Jongi/terrorist spinach. Something fishy......

^^^ This incident was significant. Govt could have some vital info before the Holey Artisan attack. But they deliberately destroyed it. As you are a gullible person you can believe whatever you like.

Your thoughts are dangerous. Your blanket statements to accuse anyone BNP-Jamaatis who questions the illegal activities of gov wont take you anywhere. Its like fundamentalists who deny to question their faiths. Mostly BD people are corrupt, it doesnt hurt to question if some transparency can be insured. Its a fact Awami has become new low level faith. Where prostitutes and drug smugglers are the top leaders. I dont have any political affiliation, its a stinky place waste of time. But its clear to everyone here, you are a chamar who earns two paisa through thug politics. But your kind should participate more in online platforms. So that we can understand more of your pussi licking dada valo ideology clearly and malice intentions towards majority of Bangladeshis. Look who liked your post, one is a delusional BD hater Indian another one is a bot who generates in certain types of threads only, its clear which group you belong to perceive anything. One day the truth will come out regarding JMB or Pilkhana, masterminded across the border.

Pakistani forum and no conspiracy theory.. that is just not possible...
Anyways if you have anything concrete that only you know of and the rest of the world are blind to it than please do share it with the authority... lol...

Btw, how does Jamaati get the right to question anything regarding Bangladesh?
They opposed the formation of the country, killed all its intellectuals and up until recently were led by people who formed the backbone of Rajakar bahini in 71. I thought Jamaat was also the party that vehemently denied the existaence of any Bangla bhai? (Remember him?). lol...

Finally , your language is a clear indication about who here is an uneducated thug!!

You must be another Indian Chamar posing as BD. So far three. Ryad, Russel, Riasat. Your whole BD concept revolves around 71 and accusing anyone BD as Jamati. So no point discussing you further. RSS uneducated goon.

Busted Ctg den was 'Neo JMB' training centre

Investigators claim citing two detainees

Shariful Islam

The Chittagong den busted on Wednesday was a “Neo JMB” training centre often visited by a man who kept his face covered and gave training to militants in bomb-making, investigators said yesterday.

The two suspected militants, arrested over Tuesday's attack on a police checkpoint in Comilla, told interrogators that the man whom they used to address as “Boro Bhai (big brother)” often spoke in Arabic.

Gleaning information from the two, law enforcers seized 29 grenades and explosive materials from the Mirsharai den.

Finding staying in Dhaka unsafe, “Neo JMB” operatives were relocating to Chittagong to set up dens and training centres.

The “Neo JMB” is an offshoot of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

“The militant outfit has a plan for carrying out a massive attack and one of their operatives already left for Dhaka to carry out the attack,” an investigator, who quizzed the arrestees, said.

The two, however, didn't give information about the target, the official added, seeking anonymity.

JASIM IDENTIFIED AS OMI
One of the arrestees who initially identified himself as Jasim was actually Ahmed Azwad Imtiaz Talukder alias Omi who has been missing since February 29 last year, said an official of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

According to a Rab's list of missing people circulated on July 20 last year, Omi is the son of Maj Kabir Ahmed Talukder. Omi was 178 on the list of 262 missing people.

Despite repeated attempts, this correspondent could not reach his father over the phone.

Omi also admitted to interrogators that he took Bayah (an oath of allegiance to a leader) from one Abu Ibrahim through Twitter.

“Initially he tried to mislead us. But as we verified his picture with our database of missing people, he admitted his real identity,” the officer told The Daily Star wishing anonymity.

An A-level student at a reputed English medium school in the capital, Omi left home out of frustration over separation of his parents. He used to translate Bengali write-ups of militants into English, the official said quoting Omi.

Although he is just 19, he worked at the outfit's policy level and had a close link with top “Neo JMB” leaders.

He had close connection with “Neo JMB” chief coordinator Bangladeshi-Canadian Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury and visited the Narayanganj den of Tamim where he was killed during a drive by law enforcers on August 26.

He had also close link with “Neo-JMB” military commander Maj (retd) Jahid, who was also killed in an operation in the city's Rupnagar last year.

Omi told interrogators that the “Neo JMB” would carry out new attacks in an organised way.

The other arrestee is Mahmud Hasan who used to make grenades.
