Need Help, guys!

. . . . .
Listen to VoA broadcasts and read aloud the transcripts as close to the original. Pay special attention to "v" and "w", "th", and "t" and "d" sounds. Roll out the "r"s softly. Smooth out the soft sound after a hard consonant such as "six". Practice. Practice. Practice.

Does an American accent help to get good scores in TOEFL ?

. . .
Here's what I did. Lock myself in a quiet room 3 months before the exam. Put on earphones, and listen to CNN broadcasts online. Watch the shape of their mouths, make sure your mouth is moving the same way they are, not just the sound because it might sound OK to you but wrong to others, but the shape will influence accent.

Also, deepen your voice. Deepen your voice! (I've bolded the deepened parts).

. .
I see what you mean. I need to put more stress on the words and not just let the words drool out of my mouth.

The American accent is strange. It has heavy emphasis on certain words being "deep" and certain having emphasis, and not the other way around.

For example in the sentence I wrote above, if it was read it out like this:

The! American accent! is strange! It has heavy! emphasis on! certain words! being deep and! certain having! emphasis, and! not the! other way around.

it would be strange (! means rising tone, bold means low and deep tone, nothing means OK).

but this is the correct way to read it:

The American accent is strange. It has! heavy emphasis! on certain words being deep and! certain having emphasis, and! not the other way! around!

Man that is just so screwed up. lol

I guess I will just stick to my strengths for the time being and try to improve where I can in the little time I have left.

Well, speaking in front of the mirror might help. I have seen my dad practice his presentations that way.

Hi,

As a sales professional---that is what I was taught---perform your sales pitch in front of a mirror---let you reflection be your customer and you observe how you look----.

For the techies---video tape your self.

My cousin came to the u s 17--18 years ago---a phd---stayed with me for 5 days---spoke to me in mother tongue all the time---but was having a very hard time with spoken english---. The day he was leaving, I told him---buddy---you are having a terrible time with your speech---yet you spoke to me in our mother tongue all the time---I don't need to learn my mother tongue---you needed to learn some tricks in speaking better english---would it not have been better to have spoken english with me all the time---.

So---Capt Jack---just take language as another tool in your 'quiver'---if you put spoken english on a similiar pleateau as the degree that you want to major in---it will make things easier----speak without shame---speak without prejudice---and most of all listen---but speak normally---and with ease.

.
I used to speak to myself whenever i am alone and it helped me a lot to improve my english fluency and confidence.
Also try adding some foreigner as your friend and practice voice chat via internet.
