In its first detailed assessment of taking on the Naxal threat, the Army top brass has concluded it would need to deploy at least 60-65,000 troops to provide an effective counter.

To this end, the Army Chief and the seven Army Commanders gave their stamp of approval earlier this month to a massive troop relocation plan in case they are ordered into combat.

Giving the go-ahead for preparations at a meeting in the Lucknow-based Central Army Command, the Army top brass agreed that at least six Army divisions will be needed to cover Naxal-affected areas in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Among the factors that prompted this meet was a Home Ministry proposal suggesting relocation of some Rashtriya Rifle units from Jammu & Kashmir to the Naxal-affected areas. The Army top brass felt that raising new Rashtriya Rifle battalions would be a better option than thinning out troops from J&K. The proposal in itself, sources said, was a clear indicator that the situation on the ground was becoming difficult to handle.

So sad to see the naxals problem has gone so badly out of control, CONgress has just allowed them to get out of hand. The internal politics of CONgress is largely to blame. No co-ordination between states. Now the situation seems desperate!!!

The Congress does not rule in West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh or Madhya Pradesh. These are the states which contain 90% of the naxalite problems. It is primarily the lack of will on the part of the state governments and in certain cases, clear collusion with the naxalites for narrow political gains which has led to this sorry state. All political parties are to blame for the opportunism and timidity which resulted in this mess. The situation is certainly not 'desperate'. It simply is no better or worse than what it was 2 years ago. The para mil has made no substantial difference despite the huge deployment. With the next general elections scheduled in 2014, there are no visible signs that the Maoist problem will be cracked well in time so the para mil battalions can be made available for election duties hence the Army option is under consideration. I do not support the use of the Army against the Maoists but the fact that the Army is being considered for tackling the Maoists despite tremendous opposition, implies that the central government is serious in resolving the issue.

I agree with most of what u say!

Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh - "The biggest challenge we need to overcome is the internal politics in the ruling party ( Congress) on the Naxal menace."

Maoist mayhem rises as states fail to coordinate - The Economic Times

If the army has to be called in, it shows how the desperate & out of control the situation is, one hopes there won't be a repeat of the IPKF disaster!

All these states have the largest concentration of tribals.

my few cents for tackling naxalism...

1: Make proper development plan for all the rural parts of india.... [which we are ignoring in all our budgets and which consist of majority of our population]
2: Make sure the availability of school, hospital, electricy ,food and water in those areas...
3:Make the employement opportunities in those area..

then lets see who will stand among with maoists......

if we bring army situation will be worse for sure

Looks like IS is getting ready for opening this new front since everything seems to be getting back to normal in JnK and NE.

i would really still say that bring GHUS KHOOR police force in action ,as primarily it was their duty to stop this disease but they didn't ...so let these Police men go and do this cleaning job.

This presents itselfs an opportunity in disguise. We need to change the laws that make the security of all states under the Central gov't not the indivdual states. This has been shown to be a key weakness that gets exploited by any terror group. How come our politics is so inept. India is a democracy but the lawmakers never pass or bring laws that are effective.

Political party & politicians personal selfish interests come first, nation is not even in top ten list.

How can the govt do that when the Naxals/Maoist bombs it as soon as our backs are turned. They even bomb railway stations and destroy railway tracks not to mention kidnapping road building workers and hence disrupting their work.

As for the opportunity, the only one the locals in the affected region can get now is through the mining companies....but they don't want their land or forest land to be taken over for mining and are fighting tooth and nail against the govt with the help of Maoists. Do they expect to get welfare and progress sitting at home doing nothing while rest of India toils day and night to provide it for them.
