Nawaz urges nation to stop treating India as ‘biggest enemy’

Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said the nation must stop treating India as the country’s biggest enemy, calling for a reappraisal of ties with New Delhi “if we want to go forward and progress.”

He said if the government cut down all expenditures by 50 per cent, a handsome amount could be set aside for debt servicing.

Nawaz Sharif, who arrived in the city on Monday for the first time after returning home from London, was talking to journalists at a hotel. Syed Ghaus Ali Shah, Mamnoon Hussain, Salim Zia, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and Khwaja Saad Rafique, all leaders of PML-N, were also present.

The PML-M chief said the army budget and that of the ISI be placed before parliament for scrutiny in line with the practice in democracies.

Mr Sharif described the decision to set up an independent commission to investigate the Abbottabad fiasco as a first step to making parliament sovereign.

“We need structural changes and this inquiry has provided an opportunity to move forward and put the country on the right track, correct its direction by putting our house in order, establish the rule of law and bring all institutions under civilian control,” Mr Sharif observed.

The PML-N chief said if the government fixed responsibility for the Abbottabad incident and punished those found guilty, a message would go out to the world at large that the people of Pakistan would not brook another Abbottabad-like embarrassment.

In reply to a question, he said he was unaware if intelligence agencies had brought about the Pakistan People’s Party-Q League alliance.

Asked whether he would get in touch with MQM during his stay in Karachi, he said rhetorically: “What for. They are now part of the government. And May 12 should not be forgotten because if we forget the tragedy, similar incidents will continue to happen.” Mr Sharif was alluding to the bloodshed in Karachi on May 12, 2007 — the day Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry was unable to come out of the city’s airport.

“I don’t want to say anything lest I be misconstrued. However, an inquiry should be instituted into the May 12 happenings and the guilty brought to justice,” Mr Sharif said.

He said the practice of dismissing elected governments midway through their terms should be stopped.

Earlier Nawaz Sharif offered Fateha at the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam, where he went straight from the airport.

Yet another pro-India suckup article by Lankan Ranger. I just ignore his threads related to India.

This is a man who according to Musharraf capitulated before President Bill Clinton in Washing-ton on July 4, 1999 or else musharraf would have liberated Jammu Kashmir

mush wd have liberated J&K? no wonder pakistan is living in denial. there are too many myths being propogated especially by army.

i suggest u do a bit of reading.

It is quite heartening to see that my fellow countrymen are finally waking up to the realities our Pakistani politicians. Usually when I speak to my fellow countrymen they support the leaders of their favoured political party regardless. I mean I have colleagues in my office who praise Zardari tirelessly, day and night.

Anyway.......I must admit that I personally believe we should mend our ties with India. We both desperately need better ties and trade, it's just unfortunate that neither of us has the guts to solve our conflicts with some radical but practical solutions. It will be a give and take scenario, leaders of both the countries will have to make some very hard, and possibly career ending, decisions to ensure a win-win scenario in the long run.

Indian's do not have any idea how their economy would grow in a stable region (including a stable Afghanistan).

Dude, it is actually some of you that need to wake up from your consistent state of denial. Musharraf would have forced India into either of 2 things......Dialogue or War. Even at that time neither country could afford a war and that was the calculated gamble by Musharraf so dialogue for a permanent resolution was the only option.

Ah.....if only we can solve all our conflicts through dialogue! But how can we do that when you Indians continue to consider yourself a 'regional super power'. In reality you cannot even go to war with Bangladesh! Not because you would lose but because of the consequences of that war and long term implications on your economy and stability. So I suggest that it's time we all got serious.

I agree that, eventually, we should mend ties with India since it is the foreign country with which we have the most in common.

However, the unfortunate reality is that India right now is being extremely hostile to Pakistan. From trade wars in Europe, to diplomatic lobbying worldwide, to Baluchistan insurgency -- everywhere you look, India is working against Pakistan short of a direct military attack. India knows that a direct military attack on Pakistan will be detrimental to their infrastructure, so they are attacking Pakistan on all the other fronts instead. The Indian threat itself hasn't disappeared -- it has morphed into a different dimension.

It's hard to trust the GOI's words when their actions speak that much louder.

Mush did force india into one thing and that is war. yes we faught war to re take those heights from pakistani army. and we won. now here come the "pointed question" wat did pakistan achieve by doing that? the answer is nothing. but it certainly lost its stature and face in the eyes of international community.

your prime minister ran to washington to appeal to bill clinton to help pakistan. which he rightly denied.

so my friend i once again ask u who is living in state of denial. i disagreed with post # 9 but agreed with u r post #12.
yes we r a regional power and yes we aspire to be a super power but it doesnt mean we cant sit accross table with our pakistani brothers and discuss issues logically and peace fully.

on topic, it is pakistan who has to realise which is its biggest enemiy. is it terrorism or india.?
