Islamabad: Incoming prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday vowed to bring about an “economic explosion” for progress in Pakistan as he addressed a ceremony marking the 16th anniversary of the country’s 1998 nuclear weapon tests.

In his speech in Lahore, he said it was “highly regrettable” that despite being a nuclear power, Pakistan was today beset by a crushing energy crisis, with its economy on the verge of collapse.

Disclosing that he would be sworn in on June 5 as prime minister for the third time in his 28-year political career, Sharif said he and his team would work hard to provide relief to people affected by daily electricity cuts of up to 20 hours.

The 64-year-old leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), which emerged as the largest party in the National Assembly from the May 11 general elections, said the people must realise that the new government “is inheriting a mountain of grave problems” from the previous rulers.
