ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad on Monday, Radio Pakistan reported.

They exchanged views on matters relating to national security and overall law and order situation in the country.

On January 24, the government decided in principle to launch a military operation against anti-state groups and the prime minister will announce the operation in the next session of parliament, Express News reported.

The government decided during a high-level meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on internal security following a wave of deadly bombings in the country.

At the meeting, the government was informed by the country’s military leadership that “a full-fledged operation in the tribal areas” is required to curb sectarian violence and terrorism, officials told The Express Tribune.

In a subsequent visit to Quetta last week, Nawaz directed the political and military leadership in the province to devise a joint strategy to ensure peace in the crisis-hit province.
