KARACHI: Pakistani Prime MinisterNawaz Sharif on Tuesday launched the construction of the country's biggest atomic power plant and vowed to pursue further projects to make nuclear the largest energy source.

The 2,200-megawatt plant is to be built with Chinese technical assistance on the Arabian Sea coast at Paradise Beach, 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Karachi.

Pakistan already has three operational nuclear plants generating a total of around 740 MW of power and has begun work on a fourth, in addition to the one launched on Tuesday.

The government hopes nuclear will ultimately provide a relativelylow-cost solution to the power cuts — known euphemistically as "loadshedding" — that blight life in Pakistan.

Mismanagement, corruption and an over-reliance on expensive imported fuels have left the energy sector in dire straits, with hours-long blackouts a daily reality in the summer months.

"This is one of the first steps of our goal of racing towards a loadshedding-free Pakistan," Sharif told the audience at the site of the plant.

The World Nuclear Association has estimated the cost of the new project at nearly $10 billion.

Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission engineers will work on the project with help from the China Atomic Energy Authority.

As Pakistan is not party to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty it is excluded from the international trade in nuclear materials and technology, and can rely only on its neighbour China for help.

Sharif pledged to increase nuclear power generation capacity to 40,000 MW in the long term as part of his energy plan.

A few kilometres further west of the new nuclear power project, an energy park is being built at Gaddani beach in Baluchistan province, with plans for 6,600 MW coal-fired power projects.

Again what should one say about this. Why building a nuclear plant at 10B $ cost? Why cann't they spend the same amount on hydel projects.? What is the main issue or hurdle in hydel? this plant is one step in good direction but we need hydel more than any other option. please spend money on hydel project. Basha, Daso, Bungi, Munda, etc need attention because if we want our industry to survive we need cheap source of energy, Also these project will save us from annual flooding and save Billion of $ every year.

This will help the electricity problem. However I wish Nawaz Sharif had ideas about how to combat the terrorism situation. We need solutions to our multi faceted problems.

It is a good move no doubt.

We can criticize as much as we want but acknowledge good too. My problem with nuclear energy is the hazardous waste. Also when we have coal reserves, we should be finding ways to use them. energy security is part of defence. Energy shouldn't be dependent on foreign fuels.

Guys, at least he is doing better than Zardari.
Also Hydal power project takes years to build, climate dependent etc. if we have to look for cons of it. But considering the devastating floods back few years, it will be worthy investment.

You guys should try solar power plants in Thar desert like Gujarat govt. did in Gujarat and suggested in Rajasthan.

Wind power does affect the climate so rather skip it.

My best bet is you invest heavily in Coal from Thar to meet the urgent requirement and keep building nuclear + solar plant on the side.
