Navy plans to issue bid for over 120 multirole choppers

Why IN not back up Indeginous chopper? At least go for some. Too much spending on the procurement!
Can't compromise on capabilities for crucial things. Indian domestic industries are not mature for required capabilities in various fields.

. .
I mean if you Want your own kid grow and mature, you need to let him experience fail off or frustration. No failure , no sucess.
Buddy, look at our technological industries. Its full of failures. You know better as you have pointed it out too.

Thing is failure and learning from it shouldn't be entire focus as far as defense of nation is concerned.

When it comes to defense, ego has to be put aside. Your defense industry has developed way much than ours.

Things in India like going this way: government invest huge in DRDO and other R&D organization. Meanwhile the air force , army and Navy prefer oversea product, put aside Indeginous one. This is really weird as my perception. Too much spending in procurement dampen domestic industry base setup, will cause setback in the longrun. this is really the case when we have honeymoon with USA in the 1980s. All the Indeginous project falls out and procuring from abroad, this led to severe lagbehind in the 1990s. Never trust those western deceiver , they never treat you like their own son.

I know the dilemma India face this time. Spend too much while have to spend so much. Believe one thing: Rome is not built in one day, so give Indeginous enough patience and never discard them.

If this article is 100% accurate then there are THREE separate Sea King replacement procurement going on!

How so, when the source clearly says that it's an optional follow order of the 16 initial aircrafts. Remember the early reports were only about the repacement of some Sea Kings, but that the order could be extended to replace the full ASW fleet. With growing number of bigger vessels, the number obviously is getting higher as well, that's why the recent reports suggested around 70 medium class naval helicopters.
However, the light class naval helicopter requirement has nothing to do with this or replacing Sea Kings, but that IN seems to want a single type to replace Chetaks in utility roles, just like as an ASW helicopter on smaller vessels.

HAL has pitched them, but IN rejected it for strange reasons. First it was performance (back then the older Dhruv version with Turbomecca engines were used), then it was not automatically folding rotors, then it was range.
HAL has offered to modify it, but IN denied, instead they strangely now searching not only for bigger naval helicopters like the NH90 or S70, but also for helicopters in Dhruvs class, so much for INs support for indigenous products.

Yes, although I find the general naval version is a beauty!

More importantly, it would serve the purpose with some simple changes. Get an automatic folding system if necessary, re-design the nose section similar to the AW 159:

And upgrade it with the latest engine and avionics from Rudra. You could even take the same stubwings to carry light anti ship or A2G missiles. Not to mention that many countries uses smaller naval helicopter for their coast guard patrol boats or corvettes, which offers some export potential too.

P.S. I think the opening article is confusing all the different naval helicopter orders, we actuall heared about around 70 x NH90/S70 class helicopter and some 50 x Dhruv / EC Panther class helicopters deals, so it might be a total of 120 new helicopters and not another deal.

I personally kinda like it. It looks menacing.

My hope for the IN's rotary wing in 2016:

H-92

The Cyclone, honestly? Didn't you read about the problems of Canada?

My choice would be:

A modernised naval Dhruv as mentioned earlier, for the utility roles and smaller vessels, some S70s as a stopgap solution and a new NG helicopter development with pusher rotors.

Indigenous choppers are under development, This deal is for a different class of choppers. May be they are eyeing for establishing JV's. Like establishing the production plant in India.
