The Pentagon is working towards a third multi-year procurement deal for its Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, according to Colonel Dan Robinson, programme manager for the V-22 Joint Program Office.

Variants of the V-22 are outfitting the US Marine Corps (USMC) with 360 platforms (289 delivered so far), the US Air Force with 53 (all but 1 were delivered, and the final is replacing a lost aircraft), the US Navy (USN) with 48 (44 of those are for carrier on board delivery), and Japan has ordered 17 and is the first export customer.

The US government is negotiating towards a third multi-year procurement contract because the first multi-year deal is complete, and the second deal has 56 of 101 aircraft delivered - with the remainder coming over the next few years - Col Robinson said during a 4 April briefing at Navy League's annual Sea-Air-Space exhibition.

A third multi-year contract would mainly comprise USN variants and Foreign Military Sales to Japan. However, Col Robinson said the contract would be structured to add foreign or domestic customers if necessary.

The USN chose V-22 as its new carrier on-board delivery (COD) platform, and those aircraft are expected to be on contract in fiscal year (FY) 2018 and reach an initial operational capability in FY 2021, he said.

Japan ordered its 17 aircraft in two batches, and the USMC expects another contract with Japan could be firmed later this year.
