Navy, ICG to get berthing facilities on breakwater
Berthing facilities for Navy and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships will be incorporated on the breakwater planned for the proposed Vizhinjam international container transshipment terminal, sources said.
The Navy and the Coast Guard will be given berth space on the breakwater so that the commercial activities of the port are not hampered, a top port official said.
Eyeing strategic positioning on this part of the Kerala coast, both defence agencies had approached the State Government reiterating their request for docking space at Vizhinjam.
When contacted, A S Suresh Babu, CEO of government company Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL) said that they would soon be coming out with an integrated and optimised master plan for the port project shortly which will incorporate the requests made by the Navy and the Coast Guard.
As per the original plan, the main breakwater for the port would be 1.5 kms long in Phase I. A cruise terminal, which was later added to the project, was to come up on the second, smaller breakwater planned on the southern side of the port.
VISL, as part of numerous studies conducted for the project, has completed wave height studies for the breakwater.
The Indian Navy has asked for 500 metres of berth space and 25 acres of land near the proposed port.
The Coast Guard, which already has a small station in Vizhinjam, wants 150 metres for its vessels. The State Govern ment is comfortable with the request, but has told the Navy that it will have to share the costs.
Recently, the government had informed the Navy that it would cost Rs 498 crore for providing berthing facilities for naval vessels here.
