Kabul: Militants blew up a suicide car bomb at the gate to a NATO compound in Kabul early on Tuesday and attacked guards with small-arms fire, killing four guards and two civilians, police said. All four suicide attackers were also killed.

Kabul provincial police chief Mohammad Ayuob Salangi said the powerful car bomb blew up at about 4:30 a.m., leaving a deep crater at the first gate leading into the camp. Two truck drivers who were waiting to enter the area were killed in the blast, he said.

Three other suicide attackers wearing explosive vests then began fighting with guards; all were killed. Salangi said the guards killed were all Nepalese contractors.

The Taliban later claimed it carried out the attack.

Salangi had no further details immediately and said the attack is being investigated.

It happened after the Interior Ministry announced Monday that insurgents had killed nearly 300 Afghan local and national police in one month, illustrating how casualties among local forces are mounting now that NATO-led coalition troops have handed over responsibility for combat operations.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told reporters that 299 police were killed in the last month, and another 618 were wounded. The Defense Ministry said it did not have monthly figures for the number of Afghan soldiers killed.

In the same time span, Sediqqi said 753 militants were killed in joint operations with the military and others, and more than 300 were arrested. Also, 180 civilians were killed.

Sediqqi did not provide comparison figures from previous months, but according to an Associated Press count, the violence this year is similar to its highest levels in nearly 12 years of war.

As Afghan forces have become more involved in security operations, they have seen a sharp rise in deaths, while casualties among the U.S.-led military coalition have fallen as the international forces pull back to let the Afghans take the lead. The NATO coalition in June formally handed over all security operations across the country to Afghan forces.

According to an AP count, 807 Afghan security force members - including soldiers and police - and 365 civilians have been killed so far this year through the end of May. A total of 63 coalition troops were also killed in that span.

Last year through the end of May, Afghan security forces lost 365 soldiers and police, and 338 civilians were killed. Coalition forces lost 177 troops during that time.

Sediqqi said the biggest danger facing the security forces were roadside bombs.

"That's where we have lots of fatalities," he said.

Even as he spoke, a regional police commander and three of his men were killed when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in the country's north.

Baghlan provincial police spokesman Jaweed Basharat said district commander Habinul Rahman was killed when the bomb exploded next to his vehicle while on patrol Monday morning.

In the western province of Badghis, 12 Taliban militants were killed in two days of fighting at three border security posts, provincial governor's spokesman Mirwas Mirzakwal said. Three policemen were wounded, he said.

That way more are dying in Pakistan in suicide attacks. So does that mean that TTP is winning?

Straw man argument. The foreign-supported TTP plays a numbers game - the more they kill, the more they achieve in strategic terms for their foreign masters. In comparison, the Afghan resistance targets the nerve centers of the occupation forces repeatedly. The more they do, the more they demonstrate that the resistance has not subsided. They win not by playing a numbers game but by refusing to accept the occupation. Big difference.

There is not much that anyone can do against a Mohammadden hell bent on blowing himself to smithereens.

Seemingly, there isn't much one can do either about hate-filled Hindutva-types/secular Indians hell bent on wasting their time, and others' too, in ceaselessly trolling on this forum.

The word is "Muslim", not "Mohammedan" (there, fixed the spelling for you too). But you knew that. The only reason to use this nonsensical 18'th century British term is to try to insult, something that Indian trolls here are masters at.

Of course, the word "Mohammedan" has no basis in fact, as Islam is a continuation of the same ideas of faith in God that spawned Christianity and Judaism. At best, it is European imperial ethnocentrism (from Christ to "Christianity", ergo from Mohammed (PBUH) to "Mohammedanism"), at worst a deliberate attempt at mockery. It would be far more precise to term this "Abrahamism" if you excise the divine origins of all three faiths, and just wanted to be truthful and accurate. Not that truth or accuracy carries any meaning for your kind, but one has to put the record straight.

Are you for serious. So ttp is a foriegn sponsored entity and what is afghan taliban then? Is not pakistan taking credit for bringing them to the table with official diplomats talking about giving them some provinces to rule and the strategic depth and what not. You seem to get so very selective when gloating than when bloating it seems.

Regarding your objection to my use of mohhamedens (thanks for the correction i am really not good at spelling arabic terms) I am surprised that you find this derogatory when Iit is a very commonly followed term. And you would for sure have noticed the affinity that taliban has taken to suicide bombings and the mastery thus achieved for maximum accuracy and damage. There is clearly no getting away from that guy!! What is this hindu contempt that you talk of there? By the way, do you approve of this suicide bombing? I mean when done in afghanistan?

I guess the Jews are paying he TTP very handsomely - for them to be willing to blow themselves up.

Mohammadden?

Afghans have resisted even the Not so great Alexander.

I just love it when every time religion is used to spice things up.

Taliban were US's best friend and now they are fighting.

The TTP (as well as the BLA) ONLY targets Pakistan and Muslims; it most certainly does NOT target the occupation forces in Afghanistan. You don't have to be a genius in geopolitical strategy to conclude that the TTP is foreign-sponsored - the proof is in the actions, not the words of the TTP.

As an Indian you should be aware of your country's violation of International Law in 1971 when it trained, armed, funded and sponsored the Mukti Bahini to fulfill Indira Gandhi's dreams of splintering Pakistan. (If you are not, read "The Kaoboys" by B. Raman.) The TTP is today's Mukti Bahini, and both it and the BLA are an attempt to replay the 1971 scenario on an even grander and more ambitious scale. The name of the group was chosen carefully and deliberately to create confusion in the minds of the masses. Calling the TTP the Pakistani "Taliban" accomplishes at least two profound propaganda aims: (1) demonization of the Afghan resistance, and (2) demonization of Islam, as the Taliban government in Afghanistan called itself the "Islamic Emirate". To a considerable degree, the propaganda angle, at least, has worked, and you can see it on this forum repeatedly as people refuse to accept that a distinction exists between the Afghan Taliban and the Pakistani "Taliban".

As for your other insinuation, Pakistan helping to bring the Afghan resistance to the negotiating table does not imply automatically that Pakistan controls them. The stated aims of the resistance is to end the foreign occupation, and if they feel that negotiations are one way to accomplish this, they will clearly negotiate with or without Pakistan's help.

The word is derogatory to Muslims, as well as being nonsensical for the reasons I outlined earlier. Its usage is not as common today as it used to be - modern propagandists have gone way beyond 18th century Imperial propaganda after they invented the even more effective lexicon of "terrorist", "extremist", "fundamentalist", "Islamist" etc. to describe Muslims.

As for suicide bombings, suffice it to say that the act of committing suicide is not permitted in Islam. Also, the Tamil Tigers were the ones who practically invented the concept, not the Taliban. Those who control the TTP and other Khawarij elements certainly learned a thing or two from the Tigers, it seems.
