KABUL, Afghanistan — A suicide attacker driving an explosives-packed vehicle targeted a NATO military convoy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Tuesday, police and a NATO official said.

Police on the scene said casualties were expected. "It was a suicide car bomber, there are casualties but it is too early to know the extent of the damage," said Kabul deputy police chief Sayed Gulagha.

A spokesman for the NATO mission in Afghanistan, US Army Col. Brian Tribus, said that a coalition convoy had been attacked.

"We can confirm there was an attack on coalition forces. We are gathering information," he said.

The explosion happened at 1.20 p.m. on the main airport road in eastern Kabul. The blast sent a huge plume of black smoke over the city.

It happened as government employees were leaving their offices and roads were choked with vehicles as the working day is shortened during the Ramadan fasting month.

It comes a week after an audacious attack on the nation's parliament, which highlighted the ability of insurgents, who have been fighting to overthrow the Kabul government for almost 14 years, to enter the highly fortified capital to stage deadly attacks.

Also on Tuesday, a suicide attack on the police headquarters of southern Helmand province killed up to three people and wounded more than 50, including policemen, officials said.

Omar Zawak, spokesman for the governor of Helmand province, said most of the injured in the Tuesday morning attack were women and children.

Police spokesman Farid Hamad Obaid said a car packed with explosives was driven into the back wall of the police headquarters in an attempt to breach a gate. All the gunmen fled the area, he said.

Also Tuesday in eastern Paktya province, three people were killed and one wounded when their vehicle hit a roadside mine, the provincial police chief Zalmai Oryakhel said.

U.S. soldiers attend to a wounded soldier at the site of a blast in Kabul on Tuesday. A suicide bomber attacked a convoy of foreign troops serving with NATO on the main road running between Kabul's airport and the U.S. Embassy, police and security officials said.

The attack took place less than a kilometre from the U.S. Embassy.
One person was killed and at least 19 people were wounded in a suicide bomb attack on NATO troops as their truck convoy passed down the main road running between Kabul's airport and the U.S. Embassy, police and health ministry officials said.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing. The claim came in a text message sent to The Associated Press.

Interior Ministry spokesman Seddiq Sediqqi says one civilian was killed in the attack, which also wounded 19 people.

The attack took place less than a kilometre from the U.S. Embassy.

It comes as insurgents intensify their spring offensive, which was launched in April.

The force of the blast rattled windows in the capital’s heavily guarded diplomatic enclave and sent a huge column of grey smoke skywards.

Most NATO troops left Afghanistan last year when the combat mission ended and only a small contingent remains to train Afghan security forces. Some U.S. troops are still engaged in fighting the Taliban insurgency.

It was the second major attack in Kabul since the start of Ramadan. The Taliban had rejected a request for a ceasefire during the Muslim fasting month, and the militants' summer offensive has continued unabated despite exploratory talks earlier this year between Afghan and Taliban officials in Qatar.

Last week, militants mounted an assault on the parliament as lawmakers prepared to vote on a new Defence Minister.

Insurgents also carried out a suicide attack the police headquarters in Helmand killing two people and wounding more than 50, according to officials in the southern province.

"The first bomber in a car detonated his explosives near the police headquarters to pave the way for two others to enter," Omar Zwak, a spokesman for Helmand's Governor, said.

"Another detonated explosives attached to his body and the third one was shot and killed by security forces."

The images suggest it was a brazen attack on U.S. troops in a relatively safe section of Kabul where Westerners regularly travel near the international airport.

BRISTOL, R.I. — An Army Green Beret from Rhode Island was killed in Afghanistan just a month after he was honored at the Fourth of July parade in his hometown of Bristol.

McKenna, a 17-year Army veteran, was serving at the rank of first sergeant during his deployment. The Pentagon said he was struck by enemy small arms fire.

Rhode Island U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, who announced McKenna's death Saturday night, had joined state Rep. Raymond Gallison at the parade to present McKenna with a U.S. flag flown over the Capitol.

Gov. Gina Raimondo ordered flags flown at half-staff beginning Tuesday through his funeral services.
