No they followed the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad PBUH so they were already following Sunnah, hadith only needed to be compiled in writing when a lot of time elapsed so that it would not be forgotten. Just like the Quran originally was memorized by Prophet Muhammad PBUH and sahaba until it became necessary to be written down due to many sahaba being martyed in battle.
