Naseerullah Babar dies

His brother was our next door neighbor. I ve seen the man and remember the event Irfan bhai mentions about the school bus hijacking very well (it is model school peshawar bus if I remember correctly).

One of the better person coming out of PPP.

I had read about Gen Babar’s feat of capturing Indian soldiers during 1965 while I was a student in London and have admired him since then. May his soul rest in peace.

Last I saw Gen Babar was about 3 years ago on program ‘Views on news’ hosted by Dr Anwar Maqsood. He was asked to comment about Gen Hamid Gul (a favourite of Dr Maqsood) as Gen Babar was senior to Hamid Gul. He replied that Gen Gul was fired by PPP Govt as DG ISI for incompetence. He also remarked that Hamid Gul fought in two wars with India; some should ask him about any action of note that he performed during the fighting?

What i have read about him about this episode that he was flying OH-13S (Bell 47) with another officer, near line of control. in the fog of battle, while flying, he crossed into enemy territory, and when fuel was low, landed in an Indian Army unit, thinking it a Pakistani Unit. When troops start moving towards the helicopter, then General Baber realized, seeing their uniform, that he had mistakenly landed in An Indian Army Unit ground. Still, displaying sheer courage and confidence, he gotout the helicopter, took out his sidearm and pointed towards the advancing bunch of soldiers and shouted at them that they all have been surrounded by Pakistan Army troops from all side, and they will be reaching that unit area shortly. He asked them to lay arms and surrender.
Indian soldiers were confused, but watching the courage and confidence in Babar's voice, they believed him and fell into his bluff. General Babar then started his helicopter, asked the group of Indian soldiers to start moving with hands above their hands towards Pakistani territory, while he himself flew behind them. soon, they reached Pakistani troops and everybody was surprised, when they found a group of puzzled Indian soldiers come running towards Pakistani positions with a small Pakistan Army Aviation helicopter flying at their backs.

I Salute General (R) Naseer Ullah Khan Baber,
May his soul rest in peace.

I was in Karachi when Nasirullah was on the hunt for warring gangs..It was a war like operation..All mobile phones and pay phones were disconnected for many weeks...Although many innocents were also killed and tortured by security forces..
There were incidents of sniper fire on army and navy personnel and we were not allowed to go out in our normal haircuts and it was a rare occasion when services personnel could keep long hair..

I remember him for his role as interior minister in two different occasions . One during the Karachi operation which was cleansing Karachi off the warring gangs during the 90s and convincing the MQM thugs of that time that playing at the hands of the Indians was a loss making venture which meant loosing index finger or life at the hands of the security forces. His crack down eventually helped the MQM leadership to realise that playing an anarchist was not going to get it any where and only viable way for its future survival was to come in the political fold of Pakistan.

hahaha, this is funny, because army didnt do nothing to control the PPP thugs from killing urdu speaking people, the civil war went on till musharraf came and stopped theblood shed, karachi situation was worse and worse, with hartals every alternate day, but army didnt do nothing

whatever the army operation was, it was made on behalf of nawaz shareef who didnt like the concept of young educated rising to eliminate feudal system, so nawaz made the conspiracy of jinnah pur. the operation only made MQM stronger, why we blame today when MQM has militant wings, its because of the daily operation where many mothers lost there sons, of course an army guy who thinks he can destroy everything and kill everybody to create peace couldnt understand, but fact it,army killed innocent people, before army operation MQM didnt have any militant wing. i can fully remember when it was deadly just to venture out of the city for sake of life, going out was considered a fatal mistake.

its just because of 1994 operations that karachi, a productive city, an economic hub suffered such a fate for a decade and weapons became prevalent in karachi
