India is likely to host Afghan President Ashraf Ghani this month eyeing to step up engagements with Kabul amid fast deteriorating relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan over alleged Pak-based terror attacks in the landlocked country.

It has been learnt that the Modi government could extend additional defence support to Kabul during Ghani’s trip besides the four attack helicopters that were supplied to fightTaliban. Sources have told ET that a detailed, updated weapons list, which includes a request for additional choppers, heavy vehicles and spares support, has been shared with New Delhi. India has already assured Kabul that a significant part of the requests would be met.

An assurance on a step up in military hardware supply was given at a high level meeting with the national security advisor as well, sources said. There has been flurry of high level engagements since last December when Narendra Modi visited Kabul which followed by his second visit to Afghanistan (Heart) this June and meeting with Ghani at Tehran in May for the trilateral agreement between India, Iran and Afghanistan for developing Chabahar port –Delhi’s gateway to Central Asia and beyond.

Ghani’s visit will happen as Delhi looks to expand engagement with all its other neighbours amid its own low ties with Islamabad. And it is not just Afghanistan which is upset with Pakistan. This week Bangladesh postponed its Foreign Office Consultation with Pakistan for the second time following ongoing tensions over execution of pro-Pak war criminals. The Hasina has also blamed ISI for its continuing terror & extremist groups. Fighting Taliban remains a common goal for both Delhi and Kabul as the two sides also look forward to intensifying efforts to fight the Islamic State. Earlier this week senior officials of Iran, India and Afghanistan met in Tehran for trilateral cooperation against regional terror.

The US has also welcomed an increasing participation from New Delhi in strengthening Afghan forces. US Commander for its forces in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson said last month that there is a large requirement to be fulfilled.

I really feel sorry for all those countries who are wasting their resources in Afghanistan.
Russia, USA, NATO and many others wanted trillions in past, and now its India's turn. All my sympathies.

Russia sunk money in Afghanistan, then it was America, now it will be India.

Giving weapons to an increasingly unpopular government won't end well.

Strategic depth! Your country is almost destroyed and you still want to hammer other;s in a foreign country. Thinking beyond capability has destroyed many countries like you and USSR.

pakistan is trying to unstable Afghanistan by using terrorist .... trust me you will not get success... pakistani got unpopular government...this was the reason we denied to give engine to pakistan railway...

Unpopular ? where ? In Pakistan or among Tali butchers

Among their own people, outside of Kabul the govt has very little control, and tribes and ethnic groups like Hazara hold resentment of the current 'elected' government.

bullshit, wheres the evidence? after Zarb-e-Azb most of the terrorist camps on our side of the border was destroyed, the remaining Taliban operates either under hidden cells, or on Afghan territory.

For what reason would we need to destabilise Afghanistan? We dont hold any claim on their lands, and we are trying to repatriate their refugees so destabilizing them would be the worst possible solution. Afghanistan on the other hand wants to destabilize Pakistan, so they can take KP, and part of Baluchistan which they see as part of greater Afghanistan, and now they've teamed up with India as both their interests line up.

We have told Afghanistan repeatedly to take action against the Taliban on their side of the border and they refuse to take action, either because they can't, or they recognize the famous trademark incompetence of the Afghan Army.

The railways issue is irrelevant, We wanted to take engines on lease, but India needed them to keep up with their own domestic demand, nowhere was there a statement on the Pakistani govts. popularity as the basis of leasing engines. We ended up buying more from the United States anyway.
