This is surely not the best of times for our nation- we are reeling under extremely adverse economic situations and there is near universal talk about the stagnation that has taken place. The corridors of power are plagued with policy paralysis of the highest level as the common man suffers extreme rise in prices. At the world level it is almost certain that the India story is over as our leaders and the nation cut an extremely sorry figure on the world stage.

The corridors of power are plagued with policy paralysis of the highest level as the common man suffers extreme rise in prices. At the world level it is almost certain that the India story is over as our leaders and the nation cut an extremely sorry figure on the world stage.


It is such a situation that HOPE becomes a virtue in rarity but when that ray of hope does emerge, expect the entire nation to rally around it. This is exactly what is happening vis-à-vis Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. In these gloomy times, the country now sees a guiding light in Modi who has already made a mark for himself in the sphere of providing good governance.

It is not only reputed international magazines, global think tanks, Indian intellectual voices but also the common man, the farmers and the youth of India that have accepted Gujarat's developmental strides in the last decade! It is these people who see Narendra Modi as the future of the nation and recently a reputed author and an opinion accurately spelt out the mood of the nation from the Internet to the streets of Bihar.

In the first week, on Jul 2, unconnected but extremely relevant pieces of work on Indian politics took the Internet and Social Media by storm. Even though the writer profile and the nature of respondents were as different as chalk and cheese, the point that both pieces drove home was one and the same.

On Jul 1, the Times of India carried an article by Chetan Bhagat in which he wrote about an online poll he had conducted to ask with Facebook fans the 'simple' question- "Who should be India's PM?" Bhagat goes on that add that there were over 10,000 responses and out of that a whooping 82% of the votes went to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi while Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi could gather merely 5% of the votes. 13% of the participants chose neither.

Around the same time, another opinion poll made it to the front page of every news site but it was different from the one that Bhagat took. 'Lens on News' conducted a comprehensive opinion poll in Bihar with a similar question- "who is the best PM after the next Lok Sabha elections?"

Conducted towards the end of Jun (as contemporary as it gets), the Lens on News Poll criss crossed Bihar and covered the views of a sample of 2147 voters across 9 seats that spanned across the length and breadth of the state. While taking into account the numbers, we must note that the survey not only covered Bihar's geographic spread but also its demographic diversity.

The findings of the poll can truly leave even the biggest of political pundits in India stunned. Leading the pack was Narendra Modi yet again with 36% of the total votes followed by Rahul Gandhi at 15%. Bihar's incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stood a poor 3rd with 12%. In a direct contest between Nitish Kumar and Narendra Modi, 71% of the respondents believed Modi's stature is higher as compared to that of his Bihar counterpart and 61% of the people disapproved of Nitish's rigid posture against Modi. Most interestingly, the poll revealed that 38% of the people would prefer voting BJP as compared to 16% for JD(U) if Narendra Modi is to lead the party in 2014.

The point of this article is not to paint the town red merely with the results of the survey (because they have already become the toast of social media and beyond). What I do seek to bring out are some of the salient features that may miss the eye but merit great attention.

NATURE OF RESPONDENTS:

As I have mentioned above, the nature of respondents who answered the surveys is strikingly different. Chetan Bhagat drew his answers from a largely well aware, techno savvy group of people while the Lens on News Polls drew answers from the interiors of Bihar's hinterland for whom the Internet is a luxury.

Interestingly, both these groups of people fall outside the BJP's core group of voters drawn to the party fold on the basis of its ideology. While there is immense middle class penetration by the BJP (by and large the group of people answering Chetan Bhagat's polls) this class is not known to have any fixed loyalties to any party. Infact, in 2009, it was widely believed that they had actually preferred 'Singh is King' Dr Manmohan Singh over any other leader, party or front. Thus, one cannot ignore this wave of support from the educated, upwardly mobile and techno savvy sections of society for Narendra Modi.

Similarly, Bihar has been a tough one for the BJP. The caste equations and overtly socialist political climate has not made BJP one of the most popular parties there. Despite undeniable support, the party has still required a big brother to capture power in the state. It may be recalled that LK Advani's 1990 Rath Yatra was halted in Bihar only. Despite this, for Narendra Modi to lead the race for PM and even take the BJP at pole position in the state is a conclusion that cannot be taken lightly.


MARGINS:


In his article, Chetan Bhagat is honest enough to admit that the limitations of a poll such as his in terms of sample size and method of voting but he also adds that to take the results lightly would be a foolish mistake. In any survey, a result of 82%-5% is nothing less than a tsunami. To rub salt into Rahul Gandhi's wounds, one can't miss the fact that even the 'neither' category leads him by 8 points.

Likewise, in the Lens on News poll, Modi has outsmarted boy this national and regional rivals by rather comfortable margins. His lead over Rahul Gandhi in Bihar is over 21 points and his lead over Nitish Kumar is a whooping 3 times. This is quite surprising as incumbent Chief Ministers are expected to perform well on their home turfs. Take a similar poll in Gujarat and Narendra Modi will sweep it with more than 80% of the votes polled while Nitish may not even qualify as a candidate to be polled. Even in individual comparisons, Nitish stands demolished.

ACCEPTABILITY:


For a decade, sections of the mainstream media would love to make us believe that a pan-India appeal is something Narendra Modi lacks. But these 2 distinctly independent surveys are only the beginning of the smashing of this myth. If acceptability was an issue then what explains Modi's popularity from the streets of Bihar to the echelons of the Cyber world?

GOVERNANCE vs CASTEISM:

"It is Modi's personality, a sense of urgency, his seeking of prosperity and decisiveness that is in sync with the disgruntled youth of today. Good colleges don't have seats and good companies do not have enough jobs. The youth wants this addressed and Modi looks like the guy who can. Yes, call it selfish, but the youth doesn't care about a controversial piece of history."

These are powerful and true words from Chetan Bhagat! It is absolutely correct that in Narendra Modi people see opportunity and aspiration. They want better schools, colleges and hospitals and not stale recipes of caste combinations served with a dose of pseudo secularism. Lets also not forget the colossal mismanagement of Nitish's Maha Dalit card that the media so beautifully exposed.

As for Rahul Gandhi, one cannot but agree with Salma Khurshid's "misquoted" statement that he is a leader who we have only seen in cameo appearances. One is yet to see anything concrete come out of him either on policy or politics.


COMBINING DEVELOPMENT WITH OUR INHERENT SPIRITUAL STRENGTH:

Along with the younger generation's thirst for development, there is equally a search of a leader who can combine both the nation's development and at the same time preserve the spiritual fabric of the country. Here is a leader who can take India to the peaks of success in the 21st century and at the same time preserve its inherent spiritual strengths that define us. Today, there is no other leader who combines these 2 virtues putting Narendra Modi in great demand.

CONCLUSION:


In conclusion, I would reaffirm that there is a greater subtext beneath these two otherwise isolated opinion polls taken around the same time but with different respondents than taking their results at face value. We knew that Narendra Modi was popular but we never knew this was the margin. We knew of social media support for him but again but not we can see a solid, almost concrete like support for Modi from groups that are outside the BJP's core base of RSS full timers.

Similarly, Narendra Modi towers not only "national" leaders but also so-called state satraps in their own home turfs if these Opinion polls are anything to go by. This is unprecedented and finally it exposes just how big is the slip between the cup (what news channels serve us) and the lip (what we do read)! It is, in short exactly the piece of stone we require to shatter the glass houses our bankrupt media and the propagandists on their payrolls find themselves in.

On a larger context, these two polls are only tiny drops in a large ocean- an ocean of intellectuals, common people, farmers, women, youngsters almost every section of society that sees in Narendra Modi a man who will finally rise to the occasion and take India to greater heights without any traces of casteist or votebank politics that have destroyed the fabric of this nation for a majority of time since 1947.

I'm sorry but he just isn't a "guiding light". Yes, he has done wonders for a single state, but as a leader for one of the most diverse and vibrant nations on earth? No, no, no, no, inaction is the same as complicity and we all know what I am talking about. There is no way a man who has even been accused of such despicable things cannot be the leader of India not the public face of India to the rest of the world. Would you really want to have economic growth (which isn't assured under him btw after all he only has experience on a state level) at the cost of tarnishing the image of India for years to come and have such a man in office? If the answer is "yes" then I have nothing further to say to you.

Modi is the Ron paul of India. Mostly supported by keyboard warriors. But no real support outside his home state.

It doesn't matter much if India doesn't become a very rich nation but having some one accused of massacre as the one who leads us, no way. We have over a billion population and we can try someone else but not him or any one with such background.

I hope whoever comes make Indians more happier. Don't want to make India rich like US and put nukes and kill innocent people all over the world. He should be able to withstand international pressure and take decisions concerning humanity more seriously. Not like ignore tamilians(srilankans), syrians, somalians, iranians etc and run away from our humanity to those people there. Use diplomatic stands to get solutions etc.

Isnt Manmohan guilty of the exact same ? "Inaction" when lakhs of crores of hard earned tax money was being swindled and he was respecting "coalition dharma". ?

Maybe that's why people of bihar voted for him rather than their popular ruling goverment in a recent survey . c'mmon man you don;t know much about the political condition of india , most of the time when their is a polarisation of muslims against someone it has mostly benefited BJP.

whosoever cry in media that they will not support modi will eventually come after him as bee's after honey if bjp crosses over 200+ on its own.

If BJP alone grabs more seats than Modi is the ONLY choice. If BJP gets less seats but overall NDA is in majority then there will be lot problems since Nitish is also a potent choice.

Finally, it will all come down to the no. of seats that each party wins.

Remember "jab ek bada ped girta he to zaameen hilti hi hai" , it was said by one of the well known prime minister who was not only accused of delhi sikh massacre but was also accused in corruption charges in bofors scandal .

Humanity and human rights are used to complete your own purposes by most of the nations.Remember what chanakya said "dhan ke bina dharm nahi ho sakta".

National interest is FIRST before anything.

Ultimately all depends on how each party performs in 2014.

If BJP alone grabs more seats than Modi is the ONLY choice. If BJP gets less seats but overall NDA is in majority then there will be lot problems since Nitish is also a potent choice.

Finally, it will all come down to the no. of seats that each party wins.

RISK is better than getting yourself loose on a bright opportunity.

You know In India every year atleast 16000 farmer commit suicide because they are not able to payback their loan and that number much much much more then the number of people killed in these masscares.....
So for me economic upliftment of India is much more important then these history chapters....

says ding dong boy who supports remote controlled mms, the man who can't even take a pi55 without Italian bar dancers permission, under whose watch thousands of children die of hunger and tens of thousands of farmers commit suicide, 75 jawans were butchered by naxals, numerous riots (ethnic and religious) all over the country has taken place and billions are looted......tsk tsk tsk, toba toba toba!!!
