A 20-member delegation of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defence, headed by Rohail Asghar Hayat, visited facilities and installations of Pakistan Navy in Karachi and coastal areas during their three-day tour. The delegation visited Navy Dockyard’s submarine centre and Karachi Shipyard Engineering Works.

During the visit, a comprehensive briefing was given to the committee on the emerging contemporary challenges in the region and PN’s response measures, infrastructural upgradation, modernization and future projects. The committee was apprised of the adversary’s massive naval buildup, particularly in the context of acquisitioning nuclear submarines, which was a matter of concern not only for Pakistan but also for the regional peace.

The committee was also briefed on the indigenization programme of the PN. The members undertook a detailed visit of Jinnah Naval Base at Ormarah considered as future home port of PN fleet where they were briefed on the existing facilities and various developmental projects of the base which will help achieve early commencement of sustained fleet operations.The committee was briefed on the nation building efforts along the Makran coast and PN measures aimed at uplifting socio-economic condition of Baloch populace along the Makran coastal belt.

During the visit of Cadet College Ormarah, the committee members were apprised of the facilities being provided by the PN to the cadets and the college’s development plans so as to make it a premier training institution on the Makran coast. During the visit of 100-bedded hospital PNS Darmaan Jah, the committee was apprised that the Pakistan Navy would remain in the forefront to render all possible health care facilities and was extending free medical support facilities to the Baloch population, particularly coastal community.

The committee was told that the PN was also integrating locals into national mainstream and a considerable number of locals were serving at the Jinnah Naval Base in different capacities. During the visit to Gwadar Port, the committee members were briefed on the initiatives taken by the PN and were apprised that in line with the vision of the naval chief the PN was committed to provide all out support for the development and early activation of Gwadar Port.

They were told that the PN was also focusing on poverty alleviation issues by providing job opportunities in different PN cadres through the induction of personnel from coastal areas.They were informed that besides establishing healthcare, educational and vocational setups, special efforts were also being made for capacity building of fishermen community to inculcate safety culture at sea and to improve their health.

On the occasion, Chairman National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defence Rohail Asghar Hayat showed satisfaction over the PN’s operational preparedness and nation building efforts. The committee assured their full support to the Pakistan Navy in its future plans and designs for safeguarding the economic interests of Pakistan in Indian Ocean and its invincible maritime defence.
