BALASORE (ODISHA):
In a bid to add more firepower to the armed forces and strengthen its sea attacks, India is contemplating to conduct a user specific trial of ship-launched nuclear capable missile Dhanush off the Odisha coast.

The missile, a naval version of Prithvi ballistic
missile, has been planned to be test-fired from a
warship offshore the Integrated Test Range at
Chandipur coast shortly.
As part of a secret mission ‘Operation Sankalpa’,
the Strategic Forces Command will carry out the
test besides a fresh trial of Prithvi-II missile.
Defence sources said elaborate arrangements
were on for the Dhanush and P-II test. “The test
will be conducted by the naval personnel to
gauge the effectiveness of the indigenously built
anti-ship missile,”
an official told The Sunday
Standard.
He said the test was aimed to study the control
and guidance system of the missile and its other
parameters besides providing training to the user
—the navy. The exercise could make the missile
more acceptable and a successful test would
pave the way for its induction.
Dhanush, which is produced by the DRDO, has a
striking range of 250-350 km and can carry single
warhead up to 500 kg. Unlike the Prithvi, its
landlubber sibling, the missile will be fired at best
from an unwieldy launch pad.
Defence planners have visualised two variants of
the Dhanush. While one will have a range of 250
km, the other will have a capability to hit targets
500 km away. Scientists also have planned to
acquire a reach of 500 km through this missile by
mounting a lighter warhead.
Part of India’s Integrated Guided Missile
Development Programme, Dhanush is about
8.53 metres in length and 0.9 metre in diameter
besides its launch weight of about 4.4 tonnes.
This single stage missile uses liquid propellant. It
can be used as an anti-ship weapon as well as for
destroying land targets depending on the range.
However, before the Dhanush trial, India’s first
carrier-borne naval fighter Light Combat Aircraft
Tejas will take to the skies. DRDO Chief V K
Saraswat said that the aircraft would go for its
maiden flight in the last week of December.

I get the feeling they are
experimenting with a light anti
ship warhead and seeker here,
for later modified use on
prithvi-1 as a desi 1200km range
x 500kg warhead x Mach10+
ballistic DF21ASBM

Did they make and structural changes to the missile, because the last time they tested it the missile looked too wide for something to be carried on a ship they should at least have made some changes.

‘Operation Sankalpa’, Prithvi-II ??
Can anyone explain ?

.
My guess is that the Missile will be launched from a Sukanya class Missile boat
as you guys know , the Sukanya class And Rajput class carry 2 Dhanush Missiles each as a land attack weapon
Dhanush can carry a 15 KT fission warhead over 600 Km coz the weight of our 15 KT warhead is 180kg
while it can carry a 150KT ThermoNuclear weapon over 350km

my guess is that since Prithvi I and Prithvi II missiles are set for retirement by 2016 , being replaced by Multi Barrel Prahar and Induction of Hypersonic Brahmos Regiment indian army
The Dhanush Missile too will retire once Nirbhay carrying P-15B Destroyers enter service or as the article say , a 500 Km range version could remain to equip the Sukanya class Replacement Missile boats , 9 of which will be delivered starting 2015..

As you guys must know that Dhanush was developed to provide a stop gap sea based deterent till ATV was developed ,
once we have 2-3 Arihant class subs equiped with K15/K4 missiles , then Dhanush will be striped of Nuclear delivery role

Too wide to be carried on ship? How wide do you think ships are?

Dhanush has been tested so many times and part of ABM tests. The anti-ship version is new. If India wants such n anti ship missile than Shaurya will be the best. Also I think ship launched Shaurya should replace Dhanush.

. .
this is season of anti ship ballistic missiles.
India's step to convert its surface to surface missile into anti ship ballistic missile is a wise and economical move. this will also reduce the multiplicity of weaponry on-board IN ships

. .
i am loving it..The timing is impeccable... India tests an anti-ship ballistic missile when a certain country is planning to induct a large ship in its inventory....Cant imagine an ill-experienced crew who have to deal with a ballistic missile homing at >10 mach...

It only looks so wide, because it was fired from a patrol ship-->ins subhadra.

:disagree: Both Prahaar and Brahmos are non nuke missiles.

. .
cant we export ballistic missiles? we are well poised now in missile technology.
