LONDON: It's the age-old question that has puzzled the finest minds for thousands of years — which came first: The chicken or the egg?

Now, scientists claim to have finally discovered the answer to the conundrum — it's the chicken which came first. A team from University of Sheffield and University of Warwick has found that a protein called ovocleidin (OC-17) is crucial in the formation of eggshells.

It is produced in the pregnant hen's ovaries so the correct reply to the egg riddle must be that the chicken came first, the experts say. However, the research does not come up with how the protein-producing chicken existed in the first place, the Daily Express reported on Wednesday.

The team of researchers used a hi-tech computer, called HECToR, to look at the molecular structure of a shell. They discovered that OC-17 acts as a catalyst, kickstarting the conversion of calcium carbonate in the chicken's body into calcite crystals.

It is these that make up the hard shell that houses the yolk and its protective fluids while the chick develops.
Lead scientist Colin Freeman of Sheffield University said: "It had long been suspected that the egg came first but now we have the scientific proof that shows that in fact the chicken came first."

The scientists now hope the breakthrough could be used in industry to help develop new materials.

hehe i could have answered this question had those scientists came to my home :P

why spend a lot of money for this purpose? - give it to me instead :D

It's a gray area depending on definition. It's plain fricking evolution through natural selection. An animal similar to a chicken evolved through natural selection and out of it came the first chicken egg (if the modern day chicken has not micro-evolved much)

Whatever but i like both ammi and uski beti very much :rofl::rofl:

I like take on both at a time :D

Its in Quran that every animal / bird were made in pairs and sent to earth... so this question was answered centuries ago...

Could you please look that up? Because I don't remember that being there. What is there, is that "We have created pairs for everything". 'Everything' doesn't even refer to living things IMO, think things that complement, lock and key for instance.

There's no 'sending to Earth part' according to my memory. There is however apparently 'flora and fauna originating from water'.

wallaahu 3ilm us Sawaab.

Finding out which comes first Chicken or Egg is just like saying who came first Adam or Eve?

Adam and Eve both came together and they were perfect human beings exactly like us maybe Bigger in size.

So Rooster and Chicken came together from heaven and their understanding brought an Egg.

100+ chicken breeds ... all came in pairs. strange.

Some breeds and types we see today are a result of genetic mixing.
i.e. breeding. Some types evolved over the time from one type to other e.g. snakes had feet before but by the passage of time they disappeared.

So which ever type it was sent as a pair first and than it evolved overtime.

Everything covers all.. also when Prophet Nooh (PBUH) built the ark, pair of each boarded.

yes you are correct doesn't explicitly say "Sent to earth" but Duhhh!!

Please no creationism vs evolution vs intelligent design vs theistic evolution debate. Stating your opinion is one thing, but mocking others is rude. I am stating this beforehand as a cautionary message since I can guess that if the thread takes off, such unsavoury comments will surely come flying in and there'll be no emphasis on science but rather on rhetoric. If you can then please avoid debating the issue altogether (stating opinion is different from debating).

Wasn't most of the animals living now, existed much earlier than man evolved?
