KARACHI A court here on Monday ordered a Greek man held for five days on charges he tried to bring a handgun onto an airplane.

Police arrested Anastasios Mirarakis at the Karachi airport Sunday on accusations he tried to smuggle a gun onto a plane bound for Dubai, from where he was to catch a flight to Athens.

Magistrate Manzoor Ahmed Siddiqui remanded Mirarakis into police custody until Saturday on charges of carrying an illegal weapon, police official Qayyum Pitafi said.

Mirarakis, who visited Pakistan along with his mother in connection with their carpet business, could face up to three years in prison if convicted.

A security official earlier misidentified Mirarakis as Annkhus Sarzio.-AP

KARACHI:

The police arrested a young Russian woman, Inna Chekmareva, for staying in Pakistan after her visa expired, on Wednesday.

She was sent to women’s jail after she was presented in court. Officials told The Express Tribune that Chekmareva was taken into custody from Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s shrine, where she was in a rickshaw, on Wednesday morning.

The Clifton Sub-Divisional police officer, Sheraz Asghar Sheikh, said that her 90-day visa expired on December 2, 2010. Asghar said that an Indian visa was also stamped on her passport. An FIR, No. 310/11, under Section 7/14 of the Foreign Act was registered.

Visa debit: Canadian national arrested – The Express Tribune

KARACHI:

Police arrested a Canadian national, Bernett Nathaniel and his wife from Soldier Bazaar’s Mill Street on Tuesday for overstaying.

Soldier Bazaar police station’s investigation officer Mohammad Aslam told The Express Tribune that Nathaniel had arrived in the country three months back. His visa expired a week ago. The 40-year-old was found loitering under “suspicious circumstances” and was stopped by a police official.

Nathaniel told the police that he was working for a non-governmental organisation. Aslam said the police and the intelligence agencies will be questioning him.

A First Information Report No. 65 has been lodged under the Foreign Act. A Canadian consulate official in Karachi said that the office was looking into the case, but would not be able to divulge any other information. An official from the Canadian High Commission in Islamabad, Andrew Ng, said that they were aware of this and the commission is providing consular service as required.
