Myanmar says Bangladesh not helping refugee return

There should be a Boycott Myanmar campaign, I have not seen any sign of that in the West. A work colleague was planning a trip to SE Asia and included Myanmar in the journey but is now thinking of dropping it after reading about the Rohingya genocide.

There are big BD communities in Europe - there needs to be a more vocal campaign to blacklist Myanmar industry & tourism

In UK that is happening. EU have put sanctions on military and currently considering reinstating wider range of sanctions.

Wheel of justice turns slowly but it turning.

Yes but there needs to be more of a street marches, protests outside Myanmar embassy. As the BD community are most effected they would be good pioneers of this movement against that government.

TOKYO -- Bangladesh is not cooperating in Myanmar's efforts to repatriate and provide residence cards to all refugees who fled its western region, a senior Myanmar official told a conference here on Friday.

Kyaw Tint Swe, a minister for the Office of the State Counselor, said Bangladesh has not honored a bilateral arrangement inked in November 2017 meant to facilitate the repatriation of Rohingya and other minorities who fled ethnic violence in the state of Rakhine.

The repatriation process should have begun in January 2018, he said, but to date no Rohingyas have returned via the official channel.

"Some 200 people have come back on their own will from Bangladesh through a very difficult journey," Kyaw Tint Swe said at the 25th International Conference of the Future of Asia, organized by Nikkei.

Implementation of the 2017 repatriation agreement has been repeatedly delayed, despite a deal signed last year with two United Nations agencies to ensure that Rohingya are guaranteed a safe and voluntary return.

But human rights groups say without legal protection such as citizenship, Rohingya refugees will continue to face persecution in Myanmar, where they are denied freedom of movement and access to healthcare and education.

Kyaw Tint Swe said the Myanmar government is ready to grant all those who come back with a "certificate of residence" while those who are eligible can apply for citizenship.

The minister said besides Rohingya, some 444 Hindus are also trapped across the border in the area of Cox's Bazar and have not been released by Bangladesh despite official requests from Myanmar.

"Some 20 Hindus have returned on their own arrangements. None came back via the official channel," he said.

More than 720,000 Rohingya Muslims fled Rakhine state into neighboring Bangladesh since 2016 to escape a campaign of violence that the United Nations has said may amount to genocide. Myanmar authorities deny the allegations, claiming they were carrying out an anti-terror operation.

The violence in Myanmar was also roundly condemned including by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as critics demanded action from Myanmar's de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. Some have called for her Nobel Peace Prize to be revoked.

As for relations with China, Kyaw Tint Swe characterized them as "very good," noting his government wants to remain friendly with all its neighbors.

China and Myanmar enjoys a "family or kinsmen" ties, he said, in which both countries enjoy enhanced mutual trade and investment.

"There has been a lot of Chinese investment in Myanmar," he said, adding that fears of Myanmar falling into a debt trap are unfounded.

Kyaw Tint Swe explained that a infrastructure financing agreement with China inked by the previous government was renegotiated by the Suu Kyi-led government to avoid a debt trap.

The minister also invited investment from all trading partners, including Japan. Myanmar's investment policy has also been restructured to be more friendly to foreign investment, he said.

"We are also inviting investment from Japan. And I'm very happy that recently it has been announced that Toyota is coming to (invest) in Myanmar," he said.
Will provide certificates, before burning them alive.

Street marches won't do anything. In fact no sanctions, protests, resolutions will work. The only way by which the Rohingyas can be re settled in Myanmar is by using force or military operation and Bangladesh is the one who will be doing it. No one will use military might on Myanmar.

.
Why do you guys think on one hand Myanmar is killing the innocent and trying to kick them out of their country or just burn them alive and then making statements like we will provide them with id cards and place to live.

What is happening? Does anyone have some facts and what do you think is the solution. Am sure you guys know more than the rest of the world

It's not possible because China backs Myanmar. If Myanmar does not want Muslims in their territory then what else can we do. Either war or bring them in to your own country. Is there no island near Bangladesh where these people could be located. I've read somewhere there is a place for them. Not sure if it was authentic or not

Those communities have been raising money for the past 5 years, but only for the welfare of the Rohingyas, political stances have been taken but no real action. The bulk of the Bengalis do not hail anywhere near where the Rohingyas are so the plight is as foreign as the Palestinian one, unfortunately.

There is a sizeable Rohangya population in Bradford who have been voicing their concerns and creating organisations. The Rohingya plight isn't a cash cow so it receives little to no attention.

Believe it or not but Myanmar has huge support from abroad due to their anti Muslim stance. Many white extremists and Indian Hindu extremists openly supports the Burmese regime and in abroad the rohingyas are often called terrorists.

The burmese are uneducated viscious imbaciles. No one believes anything they say.

They can try to fool the international community but no one believes them.

BD have clearly stated they will not force any rohingya to go back. Rohingya thenselves have stated they will not return unless their citizenship is restored. The burmese monkeys are refusing to do so and are planning on keeping the rohingya in jails. They will not be allowed to return to their villages and all Rohingya properties have been confiscated. Would any sane person return under such a condition.

The monkeys understand the mistake of expelling the rohingya and knows unless this is resolved they will remain under sanction and be an international outcast. As such their latest plan is to allow the rohingya to return, but put them in jail and slowly starve them to death. Remember there is no free press, they jail jounalists who reports on rohingya genocide and troops who are guilty of killing rohingya serve less jailtime than these journalists.

I have a doubt that the Burmese generals are into something monstrous or sinister. Myanmar a country which was under complete isolation for 56 years suddenly started killing rohingyas, started opening up to the world and is rapidly increasing their military might. Bangladesh should not risk fighting Burma. You never know what they are upto.

I am not for BD starting a war but do believe it will be forced upon us.

We need to prepare for any eventuality and need to actively pursue our interest which is this case is to have the rohingya return home and have a quiet and issue free border with them.

The Rohingya repatriation is not going anywhere. It has already been 2 years.

What about the Island, Thengar Char. I read Bangladesh is planning to move the Muslims to this Island. Do you think they can start a new future in the island. Maldives is also a small island so maybe this could work for them.

I've never had any animosity towards the Burmese.

Ever.

But this behavior is outrageous.

On a level of 1 - 10, how triggered will you be if BD takes it on the chin and does absolute zilch about it in your life time?

That's what's going to happen in the end, best be prepared for it.

A few BD members here even think its all just a bit "temporary" and Burma will soon connect China to BD heh.

Firstly, not sure if your a Raptors fan but congrats on the win.

Secondly, I'm not triggered at all.

Thirdly, I'm a realist.

Bangladesh isnt gonna go to war over the Rohingya.

It doesnt have the will or capability.

What I am worried about is the ever increasing and emboldened hostility towards BD from My.

That won't stop.

All I am saying is the only thing My will understand is force.

And BD has to put itself into position to hurt My if this behavior continues.

As for the Rohingya, that ship has likely sailed.

Unless Uncle Sam for their own reasons ever wants to get involved in some way.
