Myanmar moves army to Bangladesh border

Nasaka denies troop buildup

Myanmar’s border security force – Nasaka – on Saturday denied troop mobilisation along its border with Bangladesh, terming such reports as “mere rumour”.

The claim came during a battalion-level flag meeting of Nasaka and Border Guard Bangladesh in Maungdaw township of Myanmar. The meeting was convened to ease tension brewed over the reports of Myanmar’s troop mobilisation.

According to unconfirmed sources, the Myanmar government mobilised troops at different points on the border near Nikkhangchhari, Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas after a UN-backed tribunal last week sustained Bangladesh’s claim to 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic and territorial rights in the Bay of Bengal rejecting the claims of Myanmar.

Alarmed by such reports, BGB officials sent a letter to their counterparts on Thursday for a flag meeting to ease tension, reports our Cox’s Bazar correspondent.

At the meeting, held at the office of Sector-6 of Myanmar’s border force ‘Nasaka’ in Maungdaw, Lt Col Zahid Hasan, commander of BGB Teknaf Battalion-42 who led an eight-member Bangladesh side, sought Myanmar’s explanation on the alleged troop buildup.

“We have information from different sources that Myanmar is mobilising troops at different points along the border, including Tumbro, Bolibazar and Maungdaw,” he told Nasaka officials.

In his reply, U Theng Mi, leader of the 10-member Myanmar side, categorically denied any such troop buildup.

The rumour of troop mobilisation is nothing but rumour, he said, adding: “No situation has arisen which requires deploying troops.”

Lt Col Zahid Hasan quoted the Myanmar official as saying that there is no way for the Nasaka or any force’s opposition to Wednesday’s verdict at International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea since the Myanmar government had accepted it.

“We think a longstanding misunderstanding between the border security forces of the two countries will go once the maritime boundary has been demarcated. This judgement would help us work better,” U Theng Mi said.

The Bangladesh team returned to Teknaf around the noon after the two-hour meeting.

Zahid Hasan said he had opposed when the Myanmar officials alleged that Bangladesh media was spreading the rumour of troop mobilisation by Myanmar.

Visiting several areas including Balukhali and Tumbro border on Thursday, Bashirul Islam, commander of BGB Chittagong Sector, said he did not find any sign of troop mobilisation.

The verdict at International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, located in the German port city of Hamburg, on Wednesday gave Bangladesh a substantial share of the outer continental shelf beyond 200 miles, which would open ways for offshore oil and gas exploration in the Bay.

The tribunal also awarded Bangladesh a full 12-mile territorial sea around St Martin's Island, overruling Myanmar's argument that the island be cut in half and shared.

Myanmar china Bangladesh Future allies :victory: ... ......... everything is solved. So far, Myanmar officials claimed the verdict as win-win situation for Both countries.......

Certainly we will not sit idle and believe the Burmese promises. But, Burma knows very well it has no ability to nullify a UN verdict on sea territory. However, I believe the time has arrived to focus on BCM (Bangladesh, China, Myammar) triangular relationship. If it is allowed to grow it will bring tremendous benefits to BD and Myammar. I hope, our country's political leadership commit themselves for a good neighbourly relationship since the sole source of mutual distrust has now disappeared.

Cox's Bazar, Mar 17 (bdnews24.com) – Myanmar border security force, Nasaka, on Saturday denied troop gathering charges along the Bangladesh borders following the sea limits verdict that went in Bangladesh's favour.

"Nasaka has denied the troop gathering and said it is nothing but a sham media report," lieutenant colonel Zahid Hasan, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Teknaf battalion-42 told bdnews24.com after a flag meeting with Nasaka.

UN maritime tribunal on Wednesday gave their verdict in favour of Bangladesh over sea limits dispute between the neighbouring countries.

Following media reports that Myanmar is gathering their troops on the Naikhangchharhi, Ukhia and Teknaf borders, BGB sent a letter to the Nasaka officials for a flag meeting to talk over the issue.

"When we asked Nasaka about Myanmer government's reaction to the verdict, they said their government is looking at it positively. Because they too were in confusion over the maritime boundary issue," Hasan said.

"The verdict has cleared everything," he added.

The Bangladesh border force commander said the Nasaka officials have assured cooperation to maintain a healthy relation between the neighbouring countries.

The meeting was held in Nasaka's Sector-6 office in Maungdaw. Zahid Hasan led an eight-member Bangladesh side while Nasaka's deputy commanders of sector-5 U D Min Thang and sector-6 Aung Thein Aung led the 10-strong Myanmar side.

In such a big verdict involving vast areas of land there is bound to be tension after. I bet both of the countries were taking precautions for national security. I bet the movement of 2000 tropps (small amount) was not even a lie, i bet we did too. Its just a safety precautions since we dont have much diplomatic relations with Myanmar; therefore the lack of trust, now that it has been cleared our citizens can go to sleep peacefully at night.

I feel pity for them that they r out of control. Now they r too tensed that they don't know what to do.

What you betting here has zero proof so far and fall in line with rumor.

For the sake of long term stability and relation with Myanmar it is crucial to find out who is instigating these rumors and tension.

Bangladesh-Myanmar hostility is in India's interest.

It will close any option whatsoever for the BDians other than India.

That is the very reason india is instigating tension using rumors and any other means at its disposal. Some naive Bangladeshis utterly fail to see indian ploy but thanks for confirming indian motive.

Rumors or not, military isn't suppose to sit still on their ***. We all could be fools but bangladeshi army isn't. Insh Allah Bangladesh will defy any attack from anybody. If needed bangladeshi public will join them.

Unlike some hot head stupids like yourself, who are high on war mongering, army or BDR did not take any rash step. Rather they sat across with Nasaka, the Myanmar border force and trying to preserve nomal situation where long term interest can be pursued.

Yes Einstein! attack a country that is the the newest darling to america who also share the same interest as India....quite smart! if anything myanmar would not attack us, they have just recently started to mend it's bridges with the west and her reputation. An attack on BD will tarnish what it has done so far. They are also looking to attract tourists from the west.
