DHAKA: Myanmar has asked Bangladesh to stop providing aid to 6,000 Rohingya stranded on the border between the two countries since a military crackdown prompted a mass exodus of the Muslim minority last year, the foreign ministry in Dhaka said.

The group refused to enter Bangladesh in the months during and after Myanmar's military campaign, which drove 700,000 other Rohingya across the frontier in an act the United Nations, United States and other western countries have condemned as ethnic cleansing.

Myanmar called for the aid to be halted in talks between Bangladeshi Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali and Myanmar's top diplomatic envoy, Kyaw Tint Swe, in Myanmar's capital Napyidaw on Friday, the foreign ministry said late Saturday (Aug 11).

"Myanmar particularly requested Bangladesh to stop providing humanitarian assistance to those people ... and proposed to arrange supply of humanitarian assistance from Myanmar side," the ministry said.

Bangladesh made no commitment but "responded positively" to Myanmar's proposal to conduct a survey of the no mans land area, the ministry said.

A Myanmar minister on a visit to the strip of land earlier this year warned the Rohingya refugees that they will face "consequences" if they do not take up a Myanmar offer to return.

Dil Mohammad, a Rohingya community leader among the group on the border, told AFP the latest pressure from Myanmar to vacate the no mans land area would add to their hardship.

"There will be uncertainty whether Myanmar will regularly provide us with food and humanitarian assistance. If Bangladesh stops helping us from their side, we will have a huge problem," he said.

Kyaw Tint Swe, a minister in the office of Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, also made a new pledge to speed up implementation of a repatriation deal agreed with Bangladesh in November.

Myanmar committed to taking the Rohingya back in that deal, but none have returned. Rohingya leaders say that those sheltering at overflowing refugee camps in Bangladesh will not go back until their safety is guaranteed.

The majority of Myanmar's Rohingya fled the country following a crackdown that started last August after attacks by Rohingya militants on police posts.

They have joined about 300,000 in camps around Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district who fled earlier waves of violence in Myanmar.

Myanmar views the Rohingya as illegal migrants and has long denied them citizenship and basic rights, despite their long roots in the country's west.

Myanmar people are very crafty. They have sent a proposal that cannot be accepted by the donors as well as BD. MM wants these people to die of starvation and then will blame BD for causing their death.

. . .
I don’t like conflict but 969 Movement and sympathizers in Myanmar will be a problem for Bangladesh.

There is only one way to deal with the savages next door and that is military force.

@Aung Zaya

Do you think we are inhumane animals like you lot?
cant u read this.?

"Myanmar particularly requested Bangladesh to stop providing humanitarian assistance to those people ... and proposed to arrange supply of humanitarian assistance from Myanmar side," the ministry said.

they lived on boundary line supported by potential threat BD purposely. All u need to do is just stop assistance and we will continue it in our own programme with the help of UNHCR. i dont see any act of inhuman in this case.

So the Rohingyas have just fled Myanmar due to the atrocities they faced there and you want us to trust Myanmar to provide humanitarian assistance to them. Nice.

What's the secret of this high intelligence of you lot? Bananas?

LOL
have u read my every single word of last reply.? i said with the help of UNHCR and UNDP. we have already got a lot of intel coming from India. there're many members of ARSA resided together with other people there. perhaps BD is supporting them ? Dont forget ur election is knocking and some people may make problems by using them before and after the election.unlike camps of BD side and villages of Myanmar side, Both BD and MM can not know how many people are going in or out. keeping them on the boundary line can only cause internal complex political situation of your side instead of mounting pressure on us. ur gov is playing with fire.

This is not implementable as of now. It totally depend on the Rohingya whether they want to receive aid from Burmese savages. International organization will not let MM to starve these people to agree on to their terms. MM needs to win trust of Rohingyas not Bangladesh. Bangladesh wants to send them back but not entirely depend of Bangladesh. Besides BD already sustained these people and not in a hurry. Lets wait to see how long MM can sustain.

We had to literally bend to our knees and years of negotiation to bring back Chakma refugees in 1998-99. Its not easy to convince people who are fleeing for lives.
