I if I were you, I would keep the rest of the paper white, except for some scenery to give a perspective. The untouched white part of the paper gives you clearer contrast and more depth.
Like in the first pic of JF-17, instead of 'shading' the sky to define the canopy, you can define it with a faint thin line and very light 'shading' inside the canopy. Or add clouds.
