its mentioned that both pakistani side and indian side failed him.. pakistani leadership failed to inform surrender thereby requiring the group to fight, and indian side although treated his wounds could have sent him back... I did not understand that bit clearly though.

That means to say that he was so much wounded that he should've been handed over to Red Cross instead of keeping him in prison as POW ....!
