We had a transfer over Dubai Airport when we did fly Australia and back home and my experience was rather mixed.

We arrived at Terminal 2 and had to go Terminal 3. The distances are too big and for unexperienced passengers hard to understand. You have to use elevators and some kind of subway to switch between terminals.

You have to pass 2 security checks but it was not understandable why you get screened again before boarding. This also happened only on flight to Australia. When we did fly back no additional check happened before boarding.

There were several tanks with fish in the gate area which is basicly animal cruelity. There is always light during day and night, so the fish can never rest.

Another issue were the toilets. There were not enough toilets at the gate area so long lines of people standing infront them. It did not appear very clean either.

When we landed it took almost 10 minutes till the gangway was attached to the aircraft.

In my expereince it appeared like the airport is above its capacity and UAE are incapable to bring together the amount of people there and the things the airport can offer.

yes treating you like that comes under Animal cruelty ..

Since I usually transit through DXB, I do experience the long journey from one terminal to the other which is quite tiring after long-haul flights. The security screening may be Australia specific, as Emirates have a code-share agreement with Qantas (I assume that maybe the reason of multiple security checks) as I have never encountered such on South East Asia bound flights (Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia). Animal Cruelty, well in UAE non-Arab humans aren't treated any less. Toilets, if you go to the toilets in the terminal buildings (not at the gate area) they are quite clean (the cleanest among most of the Airports I have been to) and less crowded. Which is why I usually avoid going to the one in the gate areas. They are still expanding though. I think the one thing that the airport urgently requires is more runways as you've to wait longer periods just taxing to the runway due to traffic.

My experinces mirror yours I found the airport badly laid out, the distances are crazy and the hussle at the toilets is practically backwards for a developed country. I do like Emirates as a carrier but now fly Singapore to avoid their airport.
Although travelling back through there was easier.

common courtesy and humility are are scarce commodity in these artificially existing Arab kingdoms. if you are not well off or not a white person then you are at the mercy of rude staff at the airport.

I have sometimes had to stay at these in- transit airports in middle east including UAE and have counted myself lucky to make it to my flight with my dignity in tact.

Their obsession with white people see no boundaries. Even though I've not encountered any such behaviour but most of my fellow countrymen do. If you're transiting, you're less likely to encounter such treatment. But if your end destination is Dubai, they'll treat you like rabid dog (treatment specific to Asians and Africans)

I've never had a problem, but you're right about the distances. It's nuts. Amsterdam is bad like that too. HUGE airport! I had to run to board a flight at Doha once.

It was funny. We left the aircraft from Brisbane and walked to the transfer area. At the security check they have a fast lane for 1st class and business class passengers. We had economy. We had the tour with a women who had business class and as she was guided through the guy at the counter smiled at us and said we can walk through fast lane as well.

When asian couple who was confused and walked to that lane entry he shouted at them very rude and pushed them back. xD
