Exactly - and I agree with that assessment. But that is equal to saying Islamists are not fringe in Pakistan - and have many seekers in parliament - of course there should be - it’s an Islamic country!
Difference here being (like Vir Das said in his stand up epilogue) - there are two Indias - one which believes in a secular nation - another which believes it should be a Hindu nation.
Dont know how politics in Pakistan works but if i am correct, there are really no equivalent to BJP in Pakistan parliament.
I mean, both Pakistan and Bangladesh and most other muslim countries have traditionalist conservative partys, which i believe is what you call Islamist.
But here is the deal; Neither of them are hostile against religious minorities. None of them as far as i know, have done pogroms on hindus, christians and jews. If we leave out Afghanistan then there are really no political parties in any muslim country who enjoy huge voter base, presidency and parliament control based on hatred and killing of minoritiy religions, like BJP does in India
There is good reason for that;
Islam strictly forbids violence against civillians, in both peacetime and during warfare. Also, One cannot be force converted to Islam.
Islam allows religious freedom. Proven by the fact that most of middle east wasnt muslim majority until around year 1200. Thats almost 500 years after muslim rule over the same realms. Spain forexample didnt ever become muslim majority, even after 700 year muslim rule!!!!
There is reason why ISIS and their likes are hated by most muslims: because they dosent respect civillian life and freedom of religion.
Has there been tyrannic muslim leaders and politicians throughout the history? Yes!
Were they unislamic? Yes
Its a muslim duty to stand up against tyranny.
In India, the easiest way to win vote these days, is to destroy a historic muslim mosque, after stealthy placing a 2$ hindu porcelain or stone statue of any hinduistic deity in the dark of the night. If thats not enough; there is the pogrom option.
