Muslims have to fight misconceptions about Islam: Saudi envoy (Interview)

By Sarwar Kashani
New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS) The “anti-Islam” remarks by former law minister Ram Jethmalani who linked Wahhabis, a conservative Muslim sect, with terrorism, is a closed chapter for him, but Saudi envoy to India Faisal Hassan Trad says Muslims have a long way to go and work hard to rid their faith of the Islamic terror stigma.

“Despite all the humanistic teachings of the religion, Islam is still linked with terrorism. It is an irony. It has turned out to be a global phenomenon and is a dilemma for the Muslim world,” Trad told IANS in an interview.

“I believe it is a long way and we have to work hard to rid our faith of this stigma. I agree terrorists have hijacked Islam, but Islam is not what they propagate and what they are killing for. In fact, it is all un-Islamic,” he said, days after he staged a walkout following Jethmalani’s comments that “India had friendly relations with a country that supported Wahhabiterrorism”.

Wahhabism is a sect attributed to Mohammad ibne Abdul Wahhab, an 18th century Arab scholar, who believed in puritanic Islam and launched a movement against what he considered innovations in Islam.

Jethmalani angered the Saudi envoy with his remarks at an international conference on terrorism here Saturday.

“I found his utterances bad as he was directly blaming Islam and my country (Saudi Arabia) for terrorism. I did what I should have done as a Muslim and also as a Saudi ambassador. I walked out in protest but offered my apologies to President Pratibha Patil who was on the panel in the conference. I didn’t want to create an impression that I was protesting against her,” Trad said.

“And can you believe he was speaking in his own country which has some 140 million Muslim population?

“He was targeting the centre of Islam. We Saudis are proud to be from the birthplace of Islam. We have a huge responsibility of serving the Muslim world, and accusing Saudi Arabia or the Muslim world of breeding terror is just unacceptable, I repeat just unacceptable.”

He said his country — itself “a victim of terrorism” — has always expressed a will to wage a fight against the menace.

“Saudi Arabia has even volunteered to host a centre for global fight against terror — an idea which was mooted in an international conference on counter terrorism in 2005, in which India also participated,” he said.

“It (the Jethmalani controversy) is a closed chapter now. I have nothing against Ram (Jethmalani) personally. I don’t want to drag this issue on and on,” Trad said, adding the lawyer was speaking for himself and not representing India.

“King Abdullah (of Saudi Arabia) has initiated a movement to start a dialogue between different faiths and civilisations. That is what Islam teaches us,” he said.

“Islam is the religion of humanity. You see any great human value and belief ends up to be a part of Islamic teachings. Islam stresses on justice, transparency, love, respect and freedom for each other, love for family and women’s rights,” he said, while expressing concern that people “misread and misinterpretIslam”.

Quoting the Quran, Trad said: “The holy book says he who kills a person without a legal trial is like he killed the whole humanity. What more do you need to proveIslam is for brotherhood, peace and love? It is a religion that doesn’t even allow suicide. Killing your own self is a big sin in Islam.

“Prophet Mohammed’s wife Khadija is the first business woman in Islamic history. The Prophet used to work for her. And even continued to work for her after getting married to her. This is an example to explain how Islam respects and ensures women’s rights and freedom.”

“Islam,” the envoy told IANS, “has no justification for terrorism”.

“What is not human is forbidden in Islam. Allah says we have created mankind and given it dignity. Islam cannot accept anybody in its fold who trashes human dignity,” he said, adding terrorists have “no identity, no religion and no border. You cannot attribute it to Islam in any case”.

Misconceptions can not be fought with words. You have to work hard to remove them. You need a man like Osama Bin Laden doing exactly opposite of what he did on the same grand scale as 9/11. May be you need more than one. Shrugging off somebody calling Islamophobic isn't going to remove his/her fears.

.
Good interview I must say, I am happy to hear people having realization on what's going on around. What is bad is that now a lot of educated people are supporting terrorism.

.
Ofcourse muslims have to eventually show this with their actions. But the problem is that the media will not sensationlise boring news material like "good muslims". Only a few media outlets report on such human interest stories. Its to do with TRP ratings and you always get better ratings when you sensationlise news.

Anyways, the current Saudi govt. has done a lot to counter terrorist activites of AQ and related groups because they are best equipped ideologically to tackle it espicially related to saudi extremists.

Arresting militants:
Saudi arrests 172 al-Qaeda militants
Saudi Arabia Arrests 701 Al Qaeda-Linked Militants

Establishing a ideological rehab program that has been quite sucessful and a pain for Al-Qaeda's recrutiment base:
Al-Qaeda Targeting Saudi Rehabilitation Program

And even an Internet monitoring program that shuts down Arabic AQ related websites.
"Arabic-language radical sites have dropped to around 50, down from 1,000 seven years ago"
The Associated Press: 200 Web sites spread al-Qaida's message in English

There is no proof that it was O.B.L who did "9/11 attack" and Pakistan did "Bombay attack"

The world knows there was no terrorist problem before WW2. European/America establish the zionist state of Israel which cause the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Pakistan and India has unresolved Kashmir issue which needs to be resolved but west/china is not interest in resolving it.
There will be no more Islamic extermism if Western whore U.N can resolve Palestine and Kashmir issue.
Until and unless we resolve these issues Jaahil mollahs will continue to brain wash people for suicide bombing.

I think the best thing to do is to cure all musconceptions is to cancel CNN subscription and tell your cable operator to remove news channels from your TV list , you will have a better understanding of your faith and you will spend more time with your families -

And not be stressed out -

Because living in peace with different peoples and religions is expected. The indictment of 'sensationalizing' certain events just for ratings or for the sake of sensationalizing something is somewhat misguided. When we decided to make and accept compromises, within certain boundaries of course, to create a community, we are making long term emotional and material investments in this community. This is where we will born and raise next generation and hopefully die in peace when our times come. So naturally we will be interested in any events that could threaten the stable community that our ancestors created and that we currently maintain.

Its to do with TRP ratings and you always get better ratings when you sensationlise news.
Sensationalizing something is one method and cause of extremism, which naturally result in beliefs and behaviors outside of established norms. When Christianity was a cult or an emerging religious belief, Christian beliefs were perceived, or 'sensationalized' to be a threat to the established norms. What kind of a god is this that allowed himself to be killed by mortals? Absurd. Today...We have some muslims who sensationalized the notional 'West' to be a threat to Islam. Some of these muslims became 'extremists' in being uncompromising with fellow muslims. The point here is that one does not need to be a member of 'the media' to sensationalize anything.

Take blasphemy for example...

Piss Christ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Piss Christ is a 1987 photograph by photographer Andres Serrano. It depicts a small plastic crucifix submerged in a glass of the artist's urine. The piece was a winner of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art's "Awards in the Visual Arts" competition,[1] which is sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, a United States Government agency that offers support and funding for artistic projects.
Not just some visual depictions of the Christian god is defiled, but Christianity's text 'The Bible' is also similarly defiled in many ways, usually unnoticed by the public. Neither Catholics nor other Christian sects rioted over Piss Christ. In contrast, when there was just a rumor that a book representing 'The Quran' was supposedly flushed down a toilet by some US soldiers, muslims around the world rioted and the result was 15 people dead. No proof was needed by the muslims for them to react.

The contrast is telling. In order for the 'sensationalizing' tactic to work, the action in the event must be ALREADY perceived to be threatening in some ways. Christians no longer feel that desecrating The Bible or graven images of Jesus to be threatening to their faith, the result is that Piss Christ became merely an interesting factoid in the evening news or a small column on the back pages of the newspaper. Muslims rioted over the rumor of the toilet flushed Quran because they feel that blasphemy is a genuine threat to Islam, hence not only do muslim news media but also ordinary muslims 'sensationalized' the alleged act. So for the West -- blasphemy is a non-issue. But if there is a violent response to blasphemy, then that response constitute a threat to the 'blasphemy is a non-issue' belief by the West. The Western media dutifully reported the muslim response and noted how that contrasted with the established secularism in the West. Violence, or threats thereof, is certainly out of the ordinary and very threatening to stability as perceived by every society. The key item to remember is that the 'how' of sensationalizing something is not as important as the 'why' we do it and the 'why' must be based upon beliefs and behaviors inside an event that is considered by the general population as out of the ordinary and even threatening.

Is a non-violent response to blasphemy acceptable to muslims? What is 'blasphemous' or 'offensive' to muslim sensibilities can be broadly interpreted, from desecrating 'The Quran', in either philosophical discussions or in actual deeds against printed books labelled 'The Quran', to having non-muslims in muslim lands, to questioning the existence of Allah, to impugning the Prophet Muhammad, etc...etc...And only muslims can decide for themselves on what offense merits a violent response. Any response is newsworthy, especially for the source that educed the response. Violent responses do not need any 'sensationalizing'.

.
Muslims need not to apologize for the actions of a few strayed individuals. Just as hindu extremists or jewish extremists or christians extremists...extremists groups always have been parts of religions throughout history.

The problem is not with Islam rather it is with the western media. Western Media is controlled by a few vested interests that are hell bent on maintaining hegemony over the world, through military or any means possible. they create enemies and also stigmatize people that are not aligned with their interests.

Hon Sir,

What do you mean by “Pakistan did Bombay attack”? It implies that Pakistan government was actually involved in facilitating 26/11 attacks. I take very strong exception to this statement. This is what Indian media is claiming, is your honorable self a mouth piece of the Indians?

GOP had nothing whatsoever to gain and every thing to lose. OBL may not be involved in this idiotic venture, but the parties involved such as LET (as claimed by the Indian media) are certainly sympathetic (if not allied) to OBL.

Saudi money was behind the sectarian killings in Pakistan which started in the late 80’s. Nearly all the parties involved had either Saudi or Iranian covert support. No matter how the Saudis try to cover up extremism in the Wahabi faith, its foundation lies on forcing their version of Islam by force. Nearly all of the hijackers in the 9/11 incident were of Saudi nationality.

I however agree with your assertion about the West. Unstinting support of Israeli aggression by the successive US Presidents against the Palestinians and Lebanon is what gave birth to the militancy. However this is not Islam versus Jews, it is Jews versus Arabs. People tend to forget that Palestinian population includes a significant Christian Arab minority.

Both the Saudis and the West have had a very large contribution in promoting extremism in the South Asia. They financed the Jihadis against USSR in Afghanistan and SSP/ Lashkar Jhangvi against Iranian backed Shias in Pakistan.

In case I have misunderstood your post, I apologize for my strong language but I would still protest against associating GOP with 26/11 massacre of innocent civilians.

Muslims have to fight misconceptions about Islam: Saudi envoy (Interview)

snip

“Islam is the religion of humanity. You see any great human value and belief ends up to be a part of Islamic teachings. This is where Saudi looses all its credibility and boasts of tremendous hypocracy. This coming from a minister representating a country where women are not even allowed to drive a car. How the hell they expects the same women to run a freaking business in the 21st century with her wings clipped. Just because Islam is good does not automatically makes X, Y & Z countries good too which incidently happen to follow certain brands of Islam. As the hypocratic minister himself points out, HUMANITY is the core and it is above everything else, it overides all other beliefs (including religion). Be a human first, then be Hindus, Muslims, Chritians, Jewis, Agnostics, Aethists or anything else.

HUMANITY FIRST!!!

Pffft.

I really don't care much what the Saudi establishment have to say on the matter.

The Saudis are an embarrassment to Islam, with their barbaric attitude towards women, minorities and even other Muslims (Shias). And they have exported their poison to Pakistan since the 80s (with Zia's help, of course).

Yes Pakistan was not involved. Pakistan means "GOP". If some non state actors do such thing that doesn't mean that GOP is involved. Indian Tamils were Helping srilankan Tamil Tigers. What does that mean. The GOI was helping them.
