Dhaka (AsiaNews) – Some 20 Hindu families from the villages of Kalibari, Kajir Hat and Keramotia, in the sub-district of Sonagaji, southern Bangladesh, have become the victims of extortions and blackmail by members of the local Muslim majority, this according to representatives of the local Hindu minority. They complain that young Hindu women are being abducted to extort money from their families.

Initially Jafar, Yunus, Saiful, Ripon, and other Muslims set up a criminal gang. Their first deed was to demand 45,000 taka (US$ 650) from the family of Nitia Das, in Kalibari.

When other Hindus resisted attempts to extort money, the gang began persecuting Hindu families in the area’s villages.

They abducted one young woman, demanding a ransom of 50,000 taka (US$ 725) for her release.

In a second case a family had to pay 25,000 taka (just over US$ 360) to get the release of the young woman involved.

A local Hindu, Boloram Das, who is related to the second kidnap victim, said that more threats have been made against local Hindus.

One of the gang members, Yunus, is now threatening to marry a young Hindu woman against her will and that of her family.

“Neither villagers nor police are willing to help us,” he lamented. In addition, “at least 20 Hindu families from the area are unable to go home.”

Human rights activist Dipal Barua said that attacks against minorities are very much on the rise in Bangladesh.

Strongly condemning violence, he called on the government to “take proper actions against the extortionists as soon as possible.”

It is not that minority Hindus are systematically harassed by the majority Muslims. There is hooliganism everywhere in BD. See the report below. There are hundreds of similar crimes almost every day.

THE HELPLESS WOMEN IN FARIDPUR AND BRAHMANBARIA

Let the law go after those who humiliated them
The men who raped a young girl in Faridpur recently and had the scene recorded on video and distributed in public have not yet been hunted down. This is inexplicable failure on the part of the police. Are we then to suppose that because the scandal has centered around a poor family it is all right to ignore the matter and pretend that it will be forgotten soon? It has been days since the incident took place and yet the local administration has seen little reason to move against the accused. On top of that, the police kept the victim's father confined at the police station in Charbhadrashon for fifteen hours after having picked him up to identify the houses of those who had allegedly raped his daughter. The situation has now come to a point where the father of the victim is now in fear of the police. And, of course, there is the shame that hangs over his poverty-stricken family.

As if this humiliation were not enough, we now have reports of yet one more woman falling prey to a so-called fatwa in a village in Brahmanbaria. She has alleged that an uncle of her expatriate husband, having failed to lure her with his advances, arranged to humiliate her through forcing one of his accomplices into her home at night and then raising a hue and cry about her 'immodesty'. That led to a salish, or village arbitration, which decided in its absolute insensitivity to punish the woman with a hundred and one lashes of the whip. Predictably, the man who had entered the woman's home went scot-free. A relatively comforting aspect of this sordid episode is the courage the woman has demonstrated by filing a case against her husband's uncle and his accomplices. All but one of the accused are on the run, which only strengthens the argument that unless all of them are in the net, the woman will run the risk of seeing her stigma lead to her being ostracized by her neighbours. With all the outcry about violence against women going on around the country, it is only proper that the case be taken up by the administration and citizens as a whole in the interest of the law and decency. Similar must be the approach in the matter of the rape of the young girl in Faridpur.

There is little question that young women are these days falling victim to sex-related crime in the rural regions. The problem lies in the fact that not many women are willing to come forward and report such incidents owing to the embarrassment that might be caused to their families. And yet it must be the job of the law enforcers to go for tough action against those guilty of these crimes. In the present circumstances, the young men who have humiliated the girl in Faridpur and the men who convened the salish in Brahmanbaria, especially the cleric of the local village, must be swiftly rounded up and dealt with under the law. These criminal elements deserve no sympathy.

Muslims attack Hindus, ransack a temple and destroy four houses

Dhaka (AsiaNews) – A group of Muslims attacked four Hindu-owned houses after ransacking a Hindu temple in Narsangdi District, about 50 kilometres from the capital Dhaka. The episode occurred at night on 25 July in a village called Charsindhu.

The armed attackers from the local Muslim community stormed a local Hindu place of worship. Local Hindus came running to protect their temple but were beaten up instead. Eventually the attackers turned against the houses of some of the Hindus. Five people were eventually hospitalised

Local police moved in quickly and arrested those responsible for the violence.

Annie Halder, a local Catholic human rights activist, told AsiaNews that the episode in Charsindhu is indicative of the deep sense of insecurity that pervades the lives of religious minorities in this predominantly Muslim country.

Attacks by Muslim groups against Hindu and Christian families are frequent, especially in the villages. In many cases the culprits are not pursued by the law.

Bangladesh is home to about 143 million people, 60 per cent of whom live in rural areas.

Muslims constitute about 85 per cent of the population. More than 16 million are Hindus who are the country’s largest minority.

Terrorists Attack ISKCON Temple in Chittagong, Bangladesh

On May 18, ISKCON News Weekly received a distraught message from an obviously emotional monk at ISKCON’s Nandankanan Sri Sri Gour Nitai Ashram in Chittagong, the main seaport of Bangladesh.

On May 14 at 3pm, the devotee said, he and his peers were busy preparing for a weekend festival when fifty to sixty terrorists burst into the temple, brandishing knives and iron bars. They first destroyed the kitchens, devotee accommodation, and Gaura Nitai deities. Then, as the devotees ran into the temple courtyard in a panic, the attackers poured boiling water on them from the balcony, badly burning many.

The terrorists also stole ten to twelve thousand taka (Bangladesh’s monetary unit) from the temple donation box, as well as a further ten thousand from individual residents. Devotees phoned the nearby police station again and again, but to no avail.

“Their negligence of duty came at a terrible cost,” Chinmoydham Dasa said in his message to ISKCON News. “Many devotees were injured and had to be brought to the hospital’s emergency room.”

By the time the police finally arrived, the terrorists had caused 80,000 taka worth of damage. Neither did they seem remotely intimidated by the presence of law enforcement. And it was soon clear why. When the terrorists threatened the devotees, “You must all leave now and hand the temple over to us!” the police remained silent, not voicing any defense.

“For this crime of the police, thousands of devotees took to the streets to protest,” Chinmoydham said. He explains that after this, the police eventually took out a case against the attackers.

Chinmoydham’s report was in broken English, and it is unsure what group the terrorists belonged to, or what exactly happened when the police arrived, although it appears that the temple remains unsafe for the devotees. More detailed news on the attack and current situation will be reported as it comes in.

I won't deny the charge and personally would like to feel sorry for them however won't because overwhem Hindus and other minority support awami leauge even though its a well known fact in BD that minority ejoy the fruit of prosperity and protection under Islamic rooted party than Awami in any given time yet for some unexplain phenomena Hindus and other minority group stuck with Awami because it preach secularism. Truth is Awami isn't secular rather a fasict organization that use muscle power to loot and plunder weak and venerable including lower class muslim. Infact mirority experenced more descrimination and lost their wealth under Awami regime from 72 to now than any other Islamic rooted party in history of BD yet Hindus being heard headed and ignorant could not get out from pre historic root of their forefather.

Minorities have their choice of government in power now so it's only just that they should feel the hell bend experience under awami yet they won't reject them thus we muslim shouldn't come to their rescue this time. Hell with them losers as they never back us up form 47 to 2008.

these are village feud, dude... may be somebody lent money to somebody, then other people try to force them to recover kind of things. YOu cant comment on, without hearing the story from both the sides. Its easy to get away with things by bashing them with communal color. It happens everyday here, be it hindu or muslim.

Hmmm.....bangladesh going in the wrong way,i always knew bd was the most tolerant country in religious matters of india, pak and them......but some insane,brainwashed,un-islamic groups are creating nuisance in name of religion there......this IS un-islamic,am i right zakir???.......well your national poet said 'mora aki brinte duti kusum hindu-musalman'.......

Hindus and other minorities need to align themself with islamic rooted party to live with dignity. Awami using them since 71 yet given them zero. It's fact. Believe it or not and frankly bangladeshi muslim are fed with them for their selfish behavior.

How both side now ? You have always remain on one side. You always jump in the Indian Communal while refrain from doing so in your own country. :toast_sign: I am not interfering in your internal matter but it applies to BD too.

Jako do you know when BD was East Pakistan there were still some areas where Azan (the call for prayers for Muslims) was never ever done in the history.

I know an old officer who was posted there it was the start of 71 he was Col , during Ramazan (Ramadan) he was still waiting for the call of Azan but there was none. Then he ask a junior when the Azan is going to be done, the junior said "Sir yahan kabhi azan nahi dee gaee ajj tak". Then the officer went to rooftop and gave Azan and the Muslim soldiers broke their fast.

The point is Hindus in Bangladesh have always been given more fair dealing than the Muslims.

So do not try to malign Bangladesh by jumping over small incidents.

Whereas the killing of miniorities in India has a long history.

And if you start seaching you will end up finding the famouse muder of Saint Thomas at the hands of Hindus. there is a famouse church at the point where he was murder in South India.

Let us keep india, out of this.....we have our own heap of problems and i agree to that, but bringing india can too quickly make it another vs thread with flame baits all around...,.....btw zakir, you didnt answer me,WAS THE LOOTING AND ATTCKING OF TEMPLES,AND OPPRESSING OTHER RELIGION PEOPLE UN-ISLAMIC???

But isn't attacking a international peacefull hindu trust and group,ISCKON a big deal???.....bd was always tolerent towards its minorities, this incidents are new and surprising to me
