Chinese Muslim traders from the eastern coast of China arrived at the coastal towns of Indonesia and Malaysia in the early 15th century. They were led by the mariner Zheng He, who commanded several expeditions to southeastern Asia between 1405 and 1430. In the book Yingya Shenglan, his translator Ma Huan documented the activities of the Chinese Muslims in the archipelago and the legacy left by Zheng He and his men.[8] These traders settled along the northern coast of Java, but there is no documentation of their settlements beyond the 16th century.

The Chinese Muslims were likely to have been absorbed into the majority Muslim population.[9] Between 1450 and 1520, the Ming Dynasty's interest in southeastern Asia reached a low point and trade, both legal and illegal, rarely reached the archipelago.[10] The Portuguese made no mention of any resident Chinese minority population when they arrived in Indonesia in the early 16th century.[11] Trade from the north was re-established when China legalized private trade in 1567 through licensing 50 junks a year. Several years later silver began flowing into the region, from Japan, Mexico, and Europe, and trade flourished once again. Distinct Chinese colonies emerged in hundreds of ports throughout southeastern Asia, including the pepper port of Banten.[10]

Chinese traders boycotted Portuguese Malacca after it fell to the Portuguese in the 1511 Capture of Malacca.[12] The Chinese engaged in business with Malays and Javanese instead of the Portuguese.[13] Some Chinese in Java assisted in Muslim attempts to reconquer the city using ships. The Javanese–Chinese participation in retaking Malacca was recorded in "The Malay Annals of Semarang and Cerbon".[12]

Erick Thohir
(born 30 May 1970) is an Indonesian businessman. He is the president and minority owner of Italian football team Internazionale and the majority owner of American soccer club D.C. United.

Career
Upon his return to Indonesia, together with Muhammad Lutfi, Wishnu Wardhana and R. Harry Zulnardy, he formed the Mahaka Group.[3]

In 2001, the Mahaka group bought the newspaper Republika, then facing bankruptcy.[3] Because of Thohir's background in communications, he was chosen to lead the paper.[3] Inexperienced with the world of newspapers, Thohir received support from his father, as well as founder of Kompas Jakob Oetama and founder of Jawa Pos Dahlan Iskan.[3] The Mahaka group later acquired the Chinese-focused newspaper Harian Sin Chew Indonesia, a localization of Sin Chew Daily.[3]

A 2009 report in the Jakarta Globe noted that Thorir's holdings included the lifestyle and sports magazines a+, Parents Indonesia, and Golf Digest, newspapers Harian Sin Chew Indonesia and Republika, the television station JakTV, radio stations GEN 98.7 FM, Prambors FM, Delta FM, and FeMale Radio, as well as numerous advertising, ticketing, entertainment and Web sites.[3] He is also the founder of two charities, the education-oriented Darma Bakti Mahaka Foundation and Dompet Dhuafa Republika.[3] By 2011, he and Anindya Bakrie co-owned the television stations tvOne and antv, as well as the internet news site Viva News.[4]

Sports team ownership
After negotiations started post the 2011 NBA All-Star Game with former basketball agent Jason Levien and managing owner Joshua Harris, Thohir became part of the consortia that bought the Philadelphia 76ers. The consortia included actor Levien, Harris, Will Smith, his wife Jada Pinkett Smith,[2][5] David S. Blitzer, of the private equity firm Blackstone Group, hedge fund manager Art Wrubel,[6] former Vail Resorts CEO Adam Aron, Martin Geller, David Heller, Travis Hennings, James Lassiter, Marc Leder, Michael Rubin, and Indonesian businessmen Handy Soetedjo.[7] Comcast-Spectacor and Harris began talks in the summer of 2011. The deal was announced on July 13, 2011.[8]

Thohir is currently president of the Southeast Asia Basketball Association[2] and, up to 2006, president of the Indonesian Basketball Association (Persatuan Bola Basket Seluruh Indonesia).[4] He is also owner of the basketball teams Satria Muda BritAma Jakarta and Indonesia Warriors.[2]

In 2012, Thohir and Levien were named the new majority joint-owners of Major League Soccer club D.C. United.[9]

Presidency of Internazionale
In September 2013, Internazionale club president and owner Massimo Moratti confirmed that he was in discussions to sell a majority 70% stake in the club to Thohir.[10][11] On October 15, 2013 after a long negotiation, International Sports Capital, led by Thohir, became the majority shareholder of Inter, acquiring a 70% stake of the club.[12] On 15 November 2013, the club's general meeting appointed Thohir as new president of Internazionale, replacing Moratti, who will remain with the club as honorary president.[13]

I have always admired Indonesia. Probably the country on the planet closest to Pakistan in terms of the huge amount of ethno-linguistic diversity present, coupled with a massive Muslim population. You guys have handled your domestic issues much better though.

.
Jakarta is a very modern city, especially around the Indonesian Mall/Hyatt area. 8 years ago I went to the Stadium club for disco till next day noon time, was nearly choked to death by the second hand smoke.

Breaking Fast With Indonesia's Chinese Muslim Community

1497601571592-SULEIMANS-CHINESE-JOINT-23-of-23.jpeg

Islam has deep roots in China's Shaanxi province.
  • Restaurant Sulaiman. Most of the capital's Halal Chinese spots just cut pork from the menu and offer up Muslim diners a pretty authentic approximation of mainstream Chinese cuisine, but with chicken and beef instead of pork.

Restaurant Sulaiman is different. The eatery, located on the edge of Central Jakarta's Chinatown, sells the cuisine of Northern China's Hui people—the country's ethnically Chinese Muslims. There are two major Muslim groups in China, the Hui, who are ethnically Han, and the Uygher, Turkic people who have more in common with Central Asians than the Han Chinese.

Sulaiman Wu Di, the owner of Restaurant Sulaiman, sells a bit of both cuisines—offering diners the heartiness of Uygher food and the spiciness of the Shaanxi cuisine. There's a lot of mutton, curry, and noodles on the menu, as well as flat breads and thick stews that you wouldn't typically see in a Chinese restaurant.

Here in Muslim-majority Indonesia, most Muslims think of the country's ethnic Chinese minority as practitioners of another religion. But Islam has deep roots even in Mainland China, where the religion hit the country the same way it arrived in Indonesia: Muslim merchants from the Middle East. In Indonesia, Arab traders arrived at ports to buy and sell goods as they traveled along the sea trade routes. And in China, similar Arab traders were wandering the Silk Road, spreading their faith as they went.

The Silk Road started in the city of Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province, and the city is still home to the largest mosque in all of China. So when I heard that there was a restaurant offering Shaanxi cuisine right here in Jakarta, I figured it was probably the best spot to find Muslims bridging some of the cultural gaps we've recently been struggling to overcome.

The thing that only few non Indonesian know is that many native Indonesian are actually Chinese descendant, particularly people from Palembang ethnic, Banjarese ethnic, Sunda ethnic, Betawi ethnic, etc So the ancient China people coming to Indonesia has been absorbed into native population because they become Muslim and then married native.

On the other hand Today ethnic Chinese Indonesian are recent coming, and due to their religion which is mostly Budhist and Christian/Catholic they physical become distinct with the natives since mostly they married to other Chinese. Muslim only marries other Muslim.

Look at this people (native Indonesian) who is like mixed South East Asian and East Asian people

Chrismansyah Rahadi ([xrisˈmanʃah raˈhadi]; 16 September 1949 – 30 March 2007), born Christian Rahadi but better known by his stage name of Chrisye ([xəˈriʃə]), was an Indonesian progressive pop singer and songwriter. In his 40-year career he won many awards and accolades; in 2011 Rolling Stone Indonesia declared him the third-greatest Indonesian musician of all time.

Born in Jakarta of mixed Chinese-Indonesian descent, Chrisye became interested in music at an early age. At high school he played bass guitar in a band he formed with his brother, Joris. In the late 1960s he joined Sabda Nada (later Gipsy), a band led by his neighbours, the Nasutions. In 1973, after a short hiatus, he rejoined the band to play in New York for a year. He briefly returned to Indonesia and then went back to New York with another band, the Pro's. After once again returning to Indonesia, he collaborated with Gipsy and Guruh Sukarnoputra to record the 1976 indie album Guruh Gipsy.

Following the success of Guruh Gipsy, in 1977 Chrisye recorded two of his most critically acclaimed works: "Lilin-Lilin Kecil" by James F. Sundah, which eventually became his signature song, and the soundtrack album Badai Pasti Berlalu. Their success landed him a recording contract with Musica Studios, with whom he released his first solo album, Sabda Alam, in 1978. Over his almost 25-year career with Musica he recorded a further eighteen albums, and in 1980 acted in a film, Seindah Rembulan. Chrisye died in his Jakarta home on 30 March 2007 after a long battle with lung cancer.

Known for his stiff stage persona and smooth vocals, Chrisye was critically acclaimed in Indonesia. Five albums to which he contributed were included in Rolling Stone Indonesia'slist of the 150 Best Indonesian Albums of All Time; another four of his songs (and a fifth to which he contributed) were classified as some of the best Indonesian songs of all time in a later issue of the same magazine. Several of his albums received certification of silver or gold. He received two lifetime achievement awards, one in 1993 from the BASF Awards and another posthumously in 2007 from Indonesian television station SCTV.

There is famous young Chinese Indonesian Muslim preacher as well

665280_720.jpg

Felix Yanwar Siauw (born January 31, 1984) is a Chinese-Indonesian Islamic cleric (ustad), preacher, author and da'i, known for his affiliation with the Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), and his hard-line puritanical position on Islamic interpretations.[1][2]

Early life
Siauw was born and grew up in a Catholic environment, however he became a lapsed Catholic before he converted to Islam. He started to recognize Islam in 2002, while still studying at the Bogor Agricultural University, and converted to Islam during his college days after meeting an activist of HTI.[3] Siauw married in 2006 and currently has four children.

Career
Siauw is a popular Islamic preacher with the combined followings on his Twitter and Instagram accounts over 3.2 million people.[1] He is also an author whose works mostly raise the topics and perspectives associated with HTI.[4] Perspectives of this group had been criticized several times for inaccurate depiction of history.[5] In June 2017, he criticized the government decision to disband HTI as weakening Islam.[1]
