NEW DELHI: Bullet trains may soon become a reality in India with the government giving its nod to the proposal of a high-speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, which would reduce the travel time between the two financial hubs to two-and-half hours from seven hours.

"The 492-km-long Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail route is going to have the first bullet train as the proposed high-speed rail corridor has got the green signal in a high level meeting presided by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently," a senior Railway Ministry official said.

The proposed bullet train with a speed of 300 km per hour would drastically bring down the travel time of passengers frequenting these two vital and financially strong cities to a mere two-and-half hours from seven hours by Duronto, the fastest train at present.

"The high speed elevated rail corridor, which will be a stimulus for the development of satellite towns, will later be extended to Pune," the official said.

The project is estimated to cost Rs 60,000 crore the Railways is considering various options for its execution.

"While one option is to execute it on a PPP model, the other is to opt for tying up with another country on government to government model...The funding pattern has not been decided yet," the official said.

There are many countries like Japan, Germany, France and China which are known for high-speed train technology.

There are seven high-speed corridors which have got in-principle approval. Besides Mumbai-Ahmedabad, others are Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar, Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Hyderabad- Dornakal-Vijayawada-Chennai, Howrah-Haldia, Chennai-Bangalore- Coimbatore-Trivandrum and Delhi-Agra-Lucknow-Allahabad-Patna.

The Railways has already taken up pre-feasibility study of these routes.

Rail Budget 2012-13 had also proposed to take up the study for the a new corridor of Delhi-Jaipur-Ajmer-Jodhpur. State governments and financial institutions are expected to be stakeholders of the high speed rail corridor project as these projects will be executed through PPP mode.

China should not bid for this project. Let the indians remain backward. We all know how nasty indian train rides are. :)

Yeah, and anyways, your railway engines in Pakistan have completed their 90 day warrantee, and now rest in a junkyard. We don't want cheap quality chinese junk. They can't even build toy trains, let alone a working locomotive. All their junk is copied anyway. They couldn't even design a copying machine. lol

this wil be better than china's. india will not give it to sub standard chinese companies. we dont want trains to blow up when there is lightning. mumbai is the greatest city on earth.

what are you saying they do build toy trains for toysrus with poison paint.

these trains will be home built and of extremely high quality. in fact a few generations better than any currently available with stealth features and even flying options.

1) You do not understand business.

2) You underestimate India.

3) You overestimate China.

4) You ALWAYS forget that other countries with similar, if not better, technologies exist too.

and finally..........

YOU ARE A TROLL

mother china purchased the maglev technology from germany and other related ones form shinkasen of japan and other european countries ..at a high cost.

and now all high speed train projects are making losses...

we should avoid the chinese in this project, as they are themselves a failure... and better to work with the original vendors and second hand "middlemen" which chinese are.

Guys will India choose France? Or do you think that after buying the Raffy, India wont want to deal with France now? Japan and France along with Germany as well have the best tech in high speed rail, how would you guys feel if France won this tender as well?

.
.
Yes but how would you guys and the general population in India feel about another deal with France? Do you guys think that because of the recent sale of fighter aircraft to India, people will maybe want to now go the France route on the HSR?

Nah not really. If Rafale was the best fighter for our air force we chose it, French TGV has always been a pioneer in high speed rail, so Indian public will have no issues going with the French.

Don't forget India already had Scorpene sub and Nuclear reactor deals with France before Rafale was finalised.

That's good to know, seems like India and France are doing a lot of business deals and have close people to people inks as well, is there many French people living, working or running business in India?

Enjoy this video guys of our HSR, this was a test run.

Yeah good thing about French is that they don't mix business and politics much, not with India anyways, there is no hidden string attached.

Even the feasibility study for Ahmedabad-Mumbai-Pune High speed rail was conducted by a French consultant, Systra.

As for French people, you ll find some in Pondicherry. It used to be a French enclave.
