The most cruel thing to happen to children is seperation or divorce between their parents, regardless of the differences/nature of conflic between parents, they always want to live with both of them together.

As per Islamic law and family laws of most of the countries, in such cases child custody is mostly given to mothers (except in very rare cases, where living with mother can be harmful for them). Islam strictly prohibits to take children away from their mothers or using children to blackmail her, especially girls who must live with their mothers untill they reach adult age, however a gilr can not be married without the permission/consent of her father, a gilrs marriage without her fathers consent is void. Once the children attain the agae of adult they can choose to stay with either of their parents.

Mothers are always favoured in custody battle, fathers have to prove them unstable(financially,mentally etc) to have any hope of getting their child.
Even then, I have rarely seen father getting custody.
The child many times does not know who is right, and can be very biased, due to influence of one of the parents.
